About Choctaw Nation Chi Hullo Li
The Choctaw Nation’s Chi Hullo Li is a substance use residential treatment facility in Talihina, Oklahoma. This facility is situated right near the Choctaw Nation Health Care Center. They treat Native American women with or without children. They opened in 2001.
Their program lasts three months and is open to any Choctaw member regardless of where they live and any CDIB holder who lives in Oklahoma, free of charge. You must have evidence of physical and mental conditions related to substance use disorder. Court cases and referrals are considered on a case by case basis.
Children aged over 11 can live with their parents in the residence. School aged children attend Talihina schools while onsite. Those not in school yet go to Choctaw Nation daycare.
Chi Hullo Li means “I love you.” This more than reflects the compassionate care you’ll receive here. They don’t just treat the symptoms of your substance use, but your whole being. The goal is to guide you and your children toward a fulfilling life free from alcohol or drugs.
Once you’re accepted into the program, you’ll sit down with the friendly staff for a needs assessment. Afterwards, you’re assigned a dedicated counselor to set recovery goals and monitor your progress. You’re required to meet with them twice weekly to discuss your challenges and make any necessary changes to your recovery goals.
An average day onsite is filled with group sessions covering relapse prevention, drug education, and anxiety/depression. They address self esteem or confidence, effective parenting, and past trauma, including domestic violence. Spirituality and culture is an integral part of treatment. Beading, basket making and language are the way culture is taught here. It may also involve trips to significant places like the Wheelock Academy.
One unique feature of this program is the resentment rock. You’ll write a resentment you’ve been holding onto on rocks. This could be your ex-partner, a family member, or a close friend. You’ll put them in a backpack and carry these rocks around for a solid week. After one week you’ll take the rocks to a designated place and get rid of those resentment. It’s an emotionally exhilarating experience that makes you realize you’ve been holding onto self-created resentment towards your loved ones.
The wraparound services include full case management to ensure you have an actionable aftercare plan to keep you in the right direction when you leave. This might include employment or job placement, returning back to your family, or help with school or educational opportunities. Or, you can stay in a sober living home to build independent living skills, learn accountability, and embrace personal responsibility to support lasting recovery.
