About Breakthru House, Inc
Breakthru House is a nonprofit residential drug treatment facility for women. Their facility is situated in southern DeKalb County in Decatur, Georgia. The campus includes four residential homes, an art studio, a 19-plot garden and an administrative building. It’s accessible by public transit.
Women come to Breakthru House for the supportive environment, the life skills training, and ongoing support for lasting recovery. They treat women and their children who have co-occurring disorders of substance use, mental illness, homelessness, poverty and trauma. I know that this is an underserved population, so I’m glad that Breakthru house focuses on these women.
They provide mental health and intensive substance abuse treatment and other recovery supports like community linkage and monitoring. The most striking feature in my opinion is the number of treatment hours clients get. They have 25 hours of weekly individual and group therapy plus 15 recovery support hours. This includes case management.
Women and their children live at Breakthru House for up to nine months. During their stay, they have access to enrichment services like art, exercise, gardening, yoga, spirituality and smoking cessation. If outdoor excursions are possible, Barker Bryant Memorial Park is several blocks away and is fully accessible.
I’m impressed that Breakthru House has a formal grievance process. This lets clients and their families voice concerns and get solutions. If any client feels they were treated unfairly, they can file a grievance. It’s clear that Breakthru House cares about accountability and fairness.
Residents will get access to many community service opportunities. In the past they have worked with Habitat for Humanity and also run various social events.
