About Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health Services—CARE Campus
Albuquerque, New Mexico, is known for its annual International Balloon Fiesta, the home of the University of New Mexico, and multiple historic landmarks. It’s also where you’ll find the Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health Services’ CARE Campus, which provides direct care for mental health and substance use disorders.
Services include medical detox, residential and outpatient care, treatment for those in the justice system and a peer support center. The programs likely accept Medicaid and other insurance, and no one is turned away because they can’t pay.
Medical Detox and Residential Addiction Treatment
The CARE Campus offers a medical detox program, with separate facilities for men and women. The detox program can make medication assisted treatment (MAT) available using Suboxone for those with opioid use and connect them to a maintenance program after release.
I thought it was interesting that the county administers multiple residential programs. There’s a four-week jail based treatment course, the Mariposa Residential Program for pregnant women and new mothers along with their infants, and a residential aftercare program that helps clients reintegrate into the community after treatment.
Each of these uses evidence based individual and group therapy along with addiction education and life skills classes.
Peer Based Living Room Program
I really like that they have a peer support center as part of the CARE Campus. Peers have been through addiction and recovery and can encourage you while providing connections to essential resources.
The Living Room is open to anyone age 18 and older and you can just walk in during operating hours. They provide case management services, de-escalation, and resources including computers, charging stations, TV, coffee and snacks.
