About Awakening Recovery Sober Living
Awakening Recovery Sober Living in Los Angeles, California, operates nonprofit drug-free recovery homes, with separate facilities for men and women. The Women’s House offers an empowering space for women to tackle their unique recovery challenges, build self-esteem and build a strong support network to help them maintain long term sobriety. The Men’s House promotes brotherhood, accountability and personal development through a peer mentoring program that uses 12 Step principles to transform their attitudes and behaviors surrounding substance use.
Gender specific treatment is a key component of care at Awakening Recovery. For example, shame and impact are huge barriers for women seeking substance use treatment. Plus, many women with addiction issues have experienced significant trauma that contributes to their substance use. The Women’s House offers a safe and supportive space, where women receive peer mentoring from others who have been through similar experiences. The year-long residency in the house gives women the time they need to build a strong foundation for recovery and address unemployment, housing and child reunification issues.
Men in recovery often struggle with co-occuring mental health conditions, like depression and anxiety, and feel a lot of pressure when it comes to family and relationship responsibilities. In the Men’s House, a sober collaborative environment and peer mentoring help them see that recovery is possible despite life’s pressures and that fractured relationships can be repaired.
In both houses, in the second half of residency, clients focus on reintegrating into their community. This occurs via employment, improving relationships with loved ones and developing the coping skills needed to maintain recovery.
