Baltimore Mass Overdose Linked to New Drug
According to news reports, a recent mass overdose in Baltimore may involve a new drug previously unknown to authorities and immune to the life-saving effects of Naloxone. It’s suspected that a bad batch of drugs is responsible for 27 people in the West Baltimore area being sent to the hospital.
Hidden Dangers
Officials are currently investigating the mass overdose event in Baltimore. They’ve found that the bad batch of street drugs contained N-methylclonazepam, which is a derivative of benzodiazepines, like Xanax and Valium.
When taken, it can cause intense sedation. These severe sedative effects match the symptoms and experiences of the people who overdosed on July 10th, 2025. Not even Narcan was enough to reverse the overdose effects.
Immune to Overdose Reversal Meds
Narcan (naloxone) is the medication that restores normal breathing after an opioid overdose. But when Narcan was used in this case, many people were still unconscious. That could be due to the level of the benzodiazepine derivative in the mixture, which Narcan cannot reverse.
Researchers with the National Institute of Standards and Technology reviewed the samples and reported they’d not found this combination of street drugs before. The Baltimore Police are still investigating the overdose situation and their crime lab also tested samples of the drug.
Officials are warning the community about illicit drugs, which often contain a plethora of other ingredients. Samples may have caffeine, mannitol, quinine, and acetaminophen.
The drug manufacturers add numerous substances to prolong effects or, worse, increase them. These changes can make it hard for physicians to treat an overdose.
This new evolution in drug combinations has lawmakers, medical teams and officials scrambling. Many are seeking proactive and urgent measures to get these adulterated drugs off the streets and to develop new overdose reversal medications that are more effective on drugs laced with sedative compounds.

The Enduring Effects of Early Trauma
Arnaz’s problem drinking made lurid headlines as far back as the 1950s, when Arnaz’s fame was at its height.
Prior to becoming one half of an iconic Hollywood power couple with his first wife, the comedic actress, Lucille Ball, Arnaz endured a troubled past. He was forced to flee his native Cuba when he was just a teenager and arrived in the US penniless, struggling to survive before gaining renown as a musician, actor and entertainer.
Purdum speculates that undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder may have contributed to Arnaz’s destructive behavior, which reportedly was a significant factor in his shocking divorce from Ball in 1960 after 20 years of marriage.
The Pressures of Fame
According to Purdum, Arnaz’s early trauma as a Cuban refugee plagued him the rest of his life. Arnaz also had the stress of his large and growing business and turned to alcohol to self medicate.
Arnaz and Ball were married in 1940, but their separate careers and Arnaz’s drinking and womanizing were problematic. I Love Lucy was an effort to save their marriage and premiered in 1951. The show had them together 24/7, which also caused problems and stress.
Both Ball and Arnaz went on to remarry other people, but the two remained friends.
Desi Anraz Sobriety
According to the new biography, when Desi Arnaz was struggling with alcohol addiction, he resorted to asking his son for advice because his son had also dealt with addiction and was in active recovery.
Purdum wrote that “Desi’s second wife had died. He was alone…He knew he was drinking himself to death. Arnaz’s son, Desi Arnaz, Jr., was sober by then, so Arnaz Sr. asked his son for help.”
His son told him that he couldn’t help, but that he knew where he could get help. According to Purdum, “Desi was smart enough to know that he was throwing his life away. He was in terrible grief and mourning.”
Arnaz began his first addiction treatment program in 1985 using the alias “Bill Sanchez” for privacy reasons. Luci Arnaz remembered that her father called her brother, pleading, “I need help. I don’t want to die.”
Arnaz’s first attempt at treatment resulted in him leaving the hospital after a few days. Purdum remarked that Desi was a private and proud man who didn’t believe in going public with his problems. He also notes that alcoholism was more stigmatized at the time.
However, Arnaz returned to the program and successfully completed it.
A Terminal Diagnosis
Although Arnaz never drank again after leaving rehab, he faced a terminal diagnosis of lung cancer only a year after quitting alcohol. He passed away on November 30, 1986.
Purdum remarked that one of the saddest parts of the story is that Arnaz found recovery too late to save his life. Purdum noted that Desi was a “complicated, but very loving, talented, self taught visionary…he was a remarkable figure, and I think that’s really worth knowing.”

Minnesota Meth Bust Largest in State History
Authorities seized hundreds of pounds of methamphetamine in Minneapolis this week in what officials say is “one of the largest meth busts in Minnesota history.” The St. Paul Police Department teamed up with federal partners and the Ramsey County Violent Crime Enforcement Team to execute the historic mission.
‘Staggering’ Amounts of Meth Confiscated
Authorities seized 960 pounds of meth found in two vehicles and arrested two men who are currently being held in the Hennepin County Jail.
The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office revealed on Wednesday that they charged two men, Guillermo Mercado Chaparro (44) and Joel Casas-Santiago (46), with first degree drug sales. Casas-Santiago faces one count and Chaparro faces two counts.
Charges filed in Hennepin County divulged that the two men were found with almost 900 pounds of meth.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Mary Moriarty, the Hennepin County Attorney, said the amount of illegal drugs seized was “staggering.” She mentioned that the suspects are “associated with larger drug sales organizations in Mexico,” and the two men don’t have ties to the Twin Cities.
Moriarty made clear that “These drugs were on our streets in huge quantities and nearly made it into the hands of our neighbors who struggle with drug use. The damage 900 pounds of methamphetamine could have caused is devastating, all while funding drug trafficking networks that prey on our community. We will work to hold these two individuals accountable to protect our community.”
If sold by the pound, the recovered drugs would retail for about $1.7 million on the street.
Facing Extended Prison Time
If the suspects are convicted, they face 65 months in prison or more than five years of incarceration. According to the county attorney’s office this is the statutory minimum for first degree sales.
As stated on a social media post on Tuesday from FBI Director Dan Bongino, the seizure and arrests were part of “a hit targeting drug trafficking rings you’ll hear about soon.” It’s unclear if federal charges have been filed yet against the men.
Several Twin City locations were the targets of federal raids in June, which were prompted by the discovery of 900 pounds of meth in a storage unit in Burnsville, Minnesota.

Mary Lou Retton DUI Sparks Concern and Compassion
News of the Mary Lou Retton DUI arrest has shocked fans and set the blogosphere abuzz as police bodycam footage of the incident hit the internet. The former Olympian once dubbed “America’s Sweetheart” was stopped by police on May 17th in downtown Fairmont, West Virginia.

Retton pleaded no contest and was charged with a first offense DUI. She later released a statement and accepted complete responsibility for her actions that day.
The statement was made public by her attorney. In it Retton mentioned being determined to learn from the event and make positive life changes. She also thanked everyone for their encouragement and support.
A Significant Health Scare
The Mary Lou Retton DUI arrest comes in the aftermath of a significant health scare. She was hospitalized for pneumonia and spent time in the ICU for low oxygen levels in 2023. She was reportedly using supplemental oxygen at the time of her arrest.
Retton faced backlash in the wake of her medical crisis for her daughter’s creation of a fund to help Retton pay her medical expenses. Critics loudly questioned how a former Olympian could be unable to provide for her own medical care. Fentanyl Seized Could Kill Half of Jacksonville
Authorities say a massive Jacksonville fentanyl bust just took off the streets enough of the synthetic opioid to kill half of the city’s entire population. It’s one of a series of Florida drug raids on cartels in the region. Law enforcement from local, state and federal agencies continue working to disrupt Jacksonville drug trafficking networks and others nationwide.
Major Fentanyl Bust in Brentwood Neighborhood
In Brentwood, Florida, deputies uncovered a monumental amount of illegal drugs from a house in the heart of a residential neighborhood and public venues where children and families gather. There were over 1,000 grams of the potentially deadly drug fentanyl.
About a month ago, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) narcotics division received a tip about the Brentwood home on West 27th, advising that people were distributing drugs to the downtown area from that location.
After obtaining a search warrant based on the tip, the JSO raided the home last week and made the shocking discovery.
Fentanyl, Cocaine, Heroin, and Weapons Recovered
Officers noted that the raid revealed over 1,200 grams of fentanyl, which is a staggering amount and enough to kill over 600,000 people.
Authorities reported seizing additional illegal drugs, including massive quantities of cocaine, crack, heroin, and ecstasy. The raid also resulted in the confiscation of more than six pounds of marijuana and three pounds of Cathinone, which is derived from the khat plant and has stimulant effects similar to methamphetamines.
The raid, according to JSO, also uncovered five firearms. One firearm had previously been reported as stolen, and another had an illegal switch.
The five people arrested in the Jacksonville drug seizure face felony charges. Their ages range from 20 to 54.
The JSO confirmed that the house was close to Andrew Jackson High School. It was also near a library and a church.

The US Coast Guard just made a massive Caribbean drug seizure worth more than $20M in cocaine and marijuana. It’s not the first major drug seizure in the area and authorities have reason to suspect it’s also far from the last.
Coast Guard Nets $20M in Caribbean Drug Seizure
Cruise ships. Exotic fish. Dolphins. These are common sightings in Caribbean waters. But that’s not what the Coast Guard encountered this month. Instead of tourists or wildlife, they found drugs – and lots of them.
On July 2, the U.S. Coast Guard brought in a haul of illegal drugs from the Caribbean Sea worth more than $20.1 million. Brought to shore in Miami Beach, the seized substances included 3,300 pounds of marijuana and 2,200 pounds of cocaine.
To put that in perspective, picture a large crocodile—it can weigh 2,200 pounds. And a large walrus can weigh 3,300 pounds. The grand total of 5,500 pounds is roughly the weight of a pick-up truck.
Crime-Stopping Collaboration
The smuggling attempts thwarted by these drug seizures were the result of collaboration among several organizations. Along with the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy as well as ships from the Netherlands and Canada worked together to make the busts. This international teamwork is often necessary to stop drug trafficking on the open seas.
By stopping the shipments while at sea, officials can prevent substances from ever entering the U.S. or other countries and keep harmful drugs out of their communities.
An Ongoing Battle
Of course, this isn’t the first time the Coast Guard has offloaded large quantities of illegal substances from smugglers. In March, they unloaded more than 45,000 pounds of illicit narcotics in Florida that were seized from international waters. It’s all part of ongoing efforts to fight drug cartels that frequently attempt to smuggle drugs and money across the seas using drones, submersibles and vessels.
These official efforts disrupt the flow of drugs that fund criminal organizations in the U.S. and elsewhere. By seizing these substances, the Coast Guard and other networks are denying maritime access to traffickers.

For over 90 years, Superman has stood for truth, justice, and the American Way. But does that also mean that the Man of Steel also stands for sobriety? That’s a question we’re pondering today as the new Superman movie debuts in US theaters.
But it’s not easy being a superhero. To shoulder the responsibility of not only saving the world but setting an example for it, Superman has rarely picked up a drink. Since 1938, he has shrugged off vices that can harm the American people—or himself as their champion, including addiction.
Does Superman Drink? Behind the Backstory
Various creators have explained why Superman, and his mild-mannered alter ego, Clark Kent, doesn’t drink. One 1991 backstory revealed that, in his teen years, Clark succumbed to peer pressure and drank with his high school buddies, only to emerge physically unscathed but emotionally traumatized from a devastating drunken car crash that left one childhood chum in a coma.
A more pseudoscientific reason is that Superman’s powers come from metabolizing the solar energy from the sun, which negates the intoxicating effects of alcohol.
A Role Model to Span Generations
But beyond the backstories, the real-life explanation is simpler. Superman has long been heralded as a role model for kids.
Since his inception, the “Big Blue Boy Scout” has shown children how to be model citizens, from donating to the Red Cross and smashing the KKK in the 1940s.
In the 1960s, Superman teamed up with President John F. Kennedy to promote physical fitness among the youth of America. And in 1982, he took a stand against cigarettes by saying “no” to the arch villain Nick O’Teen.
And so, as a rule, Superman doesn’t drink. Because when he does, it makes headlines, and not just in The Daily Planet.
In 2017, an artist drew Clark Kent kicking back on his Smallville farm, chatting with his Pa and holding a cold one. The editors caught the drink in time and swapped the bottle label for root beer, but not before generating buzz, and none too happy buzz at that, among fan circles.
When Superman imbibes alcohol on a rare occasion, his lack of tolerance makes him unable to hold his liquor. In the Hollywood film Superman III (1983), audiences got to see Christopher Reeve portraying Superman as a poor drinker, inflicting property damage before flying off in shame.
Fittingly, a child’s plea pierces his alcohol-induced haze. It’s a kind of cinematic crisis intervention that leads him to shape up for the big finale.
Neither shot glasses nor bullet shots can harm Superman, but he himself knows that he’s not invulnerable. Just as Superman prevailed over kryptonite, it’s up to each of us to overcome our personal challenges.

San Diego Drug Trafficking Case Involves City Parks Manager
Drug trafficking is unfortunately all too common across the US, but one San Diego drug trafficking case involves a truly unlikely suspect. That’s because this particular border drug trafficker is also a San Diego Parks and Recreation city park manager.
In the Big House but Not Out of a Job
What happens when you strap 11 pounds of cocaine and seven pounds of fentanyl to your body and try to cross the US-Mexico border? For Juan Nazario Lizarraga Peraltaone, this act landed him in jail—but not out of a job.
Juan Lizarraga, a resident of National City, California, is listed as an Area Manager for the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, Memorial and Stockton (District 8). Part of the Community Parks II Division, this department includes facilities and programs such as neighborhood parks, swimming pools, school programs and senior centers.
In May of 2025, Lizarraga attempted to cross the San Ysidro Port of Entry with 18 pounds of illegal substances. The busy San Diego sector shares a 60 mile land border with Mexico and its San Ysidro Port of Entry is considered the busiest land port in the Western hemisphere..
Lizarraga’s smuggling attempt at this high-traffic port failed. Customs and Border Patrol Agents found the drugs, and Lizarraga was arrested.
Facing Federal Trafficking Charges
A person in Lizarraga’s shoes can face up to a lifetime of imprisonment for a first-time offense of large-quantity drug trafficking, as well as millions of dollars in fines.
Despite these potential consequences, Lizarraga’s crime isn’t uncommon. In fact, that same week, Southern District of California federal prosecutors filed 152 other border-related cases. Not all cases were substance-related, but the constant activity at the San Ysidro Port of Entry has made this region the fourth-busiest federal district in the country.
Off the Hook?
After his arrest in May, it was reported in July that Lizarraga was still on the job. Lizarraga was also granted court permission to make three separate trips to Mexico since his arrest.
Why the leniency? How is he back at work after a major drug bust? A City spokesperson commented that Lizarraga “remains in his job commensurate with due process.”
After being charged, Lizarraga was able to make bail for $20,000. Then, records indicate Lizarraga’s attorney negotiated a plea bargain of some sort just two short weeks after the arrest. However, details of the bargain are sealed.

Michael Madsen’s Brave Alcohol Addiction Fight
Michael Madsen’s alcohol addiction fight is taking the spotlight in the days following the iconic actor’s tragic death. Madsen passed away on Thursday, July 3, at the age of 67. He’s best known for his roles in cult classics like Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill.

However, the 2022 loss of his 26 year old son, Hudson, to suicide reportedly hit the actor hard. The event marked the beginning of an especially tumultuous period in the actor’s life. In August of 2024 Madsen was arrested for misdemeanor domestic battery against his wife, DeAnna, who filed for divorce the following month.
In the days and weeks before his death, those closest to Madsen were uncertain of his state of mind but had hoped he was still working on his recovery. A source that claims to have spoken with him in June said that he was in bad shape but had planned to return to rehab for additional support as he tried to navigate the challenges he was facing.
The actor also reportedly had multiple film projects in the works and was completing final edits on a new book.
The Sin City star’s 19 year old son, Luke, paid tribute to him in an Instagram Post, describing his father as the “coolest, most badass human” and a great dad.

According to recent research, senior cannabis use is on the rise, growing by 46% across the U.S. in just two years. As more adults aged 55 and older turn to the substance, researchers are shedding light on the specific health risks and long term side effects that cannabis can cause in this population.
Why Senior Cannabis Use Is Increasing
One study by the Center for Drug Use and HIV/HCV Research (CDUHR) found that seniors are increasingly using cannabis to self-medicate a variety of different health conditions including diabetes, cancer, and chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD).

Not incidentally, they also noted a rise in cannabis poisonings and cannabis related emergency room visits since it was legalized through the Cannabis Act in 2018.
Cannabis Health Risks for Older Adults
Historically, studies have focused on how cannabis affects the developing minds of teens and young adults. Despite its popularity and widespread legalization, the reality is that marijuana can have negative effects on a person’s physical and mental state, leading to issues that range from impaired cognitive function to an increased risk of heart disease. For people who use cannabis heavily, the effects could lead to more severe conditions such as cannabis use disorder (CUD) and addiction.
Now, researchers have discovered that older adults face their own set of risks when they choose to use cannabis or cannabis-based derivatives, including CBD.
This population often turns to cannabis to help manage chronic pain and complex medical conditions such as cancer, COPD, heart disease and diabetes. However, many are unaware how dangerous this practice can be particularly when cannabis products are combined with prescription drugs, over the counter medications, or herbal supplements. Combining these substances can lead to a host of health concerns including a higher risk of drowsiness, falls, and car accidents.
Perhaps the most concerning are findings from a Canadian study that was published in JAMA in June 2025. In the study, researchers explain that seniors who require hospital care for cannabis related issues are significantly more likely to develop dementia within five years compared to the general population.

Florida Beach Cocaine Discovery Raises Alarm

But these weren’t just any bricks. The items washed ashore included 25 bricks of cocaine worth around $500,000. They’ve since been confiscated and marked as evidence by the local sheriff’s office. They are warning residents and visitors not to touch any suspicious packages and to call authorities immediately if they find similar contents.
This sighting follows another incident that happened in Baldwin County. There, 50 individually wrapped packets of cocaine washed ashore on June 26, weighing close to 110 pounds.
Once the Sheriff’s Office was contacted, officers transported the bundled items to their investigations center for further analysis. After verification, Homeland Security Investigations and the Department of Homeland Security were notified of the findings to pursue the drug trafficking case further.
The Scourge on America’s Beaches
Unfortunately, the Baldwin County Sheriff reported it is not rare or uncommon for illicit drugs to surface on the beach shores as major drug trafficking cartels continue to thrive off the US coast. He requested that the community help and contact them regarding any cocaine bundles found.
One of the dangers is exposing citizens to harmful chemicals, which can be deadly. It is best to contact law enforcement immediately without making contact with the suspicious items. Handling them can result in health and safety issues.
