About American Indian Community Development
AICDC - American Indian Community Development Corporation has been serving the American Indian community in Minneapolis, Minnesota, since 1996. The East Franklin Avenue location is their administrative office. If you are experiencing a substance use disorder, staff here can refer you to their medical detox services or supportive housing throughout the city.
Medical Detox Services for Native Americans
AICDC provides residential detox services with medical supervision. This includes FDA approved medication to manage withdrawal symptoms and 24/7 support. They also do mental health and addiction assessments and refer clients to appropriate follow up treatment.
The organization doesn’t have residential or outpatient treatment services beyond the detox program, but they can refer clients to the appropriate level of care. They’ll also work to ensure that the referral is to a facility that honors and appreciates Native values.
What impressed me is how dedicated AICDC is to celebrating Native heritage and culture. They include ceremonial and spiritual designs in their facilities that celebrate the 11 federally recognized Tribes, Bands and Nations. They also have sweat lodges and other culturally appropriate ceremonies to help the community connect to their heritage.
Helping the Native Community with Housing
I think it’s great that AICDC also provides permanent supportive housing for those with substance use disorders. They have nine communities with over 200 units for families, and they also operate 47 units specifically for elder housing. There’s also a 50-bed emergency shelter that is the region’s first shelter specifically for American Indians.
Beyond supportive housing, AICDC has affordable rental units and helps Native families buy homes. The organization runs a culturally sensitive real estate company that aims to increase homeownership among the American Indian community.
