About Adult and Teen Challenge Appalachian Region

Adult and Teen Challenge Appalachian Region is a faith based residential substance use disorder treatment program for adult men ages 18 to 49 in Princeton, West Virginia. Founded in 1982, there are over 500 centers in the United States and internationally. The women’s center is located in Clarksburg, West Virginia.

A Ministry Rooted in Faith

As a transdenominational ministry, they welcome folks from all Christian backgrounds by focusing on shared beliefs. Since the program is faith based, they don’t receive state or federal funding. Donations cover most costs. They ask you to cover the cost of the curriculum and admissions processing, typically equal to one month of the 12 month program cost.

Sobriety Required Before Admission

They don’t have detox care here so if you are newly sober and expect withdrawal symptoms, they recommend checking into a detox facility first. If you experience severe withdrawal when at the center, you’ll be transported to a local hospital for medical support. I appreciate that your safety and medical stability is prioritized before beginning the residential phase of recovery.

Daily Structure and Spiritual Foundation

The days are structured to include spiritual and academic instruction, including behavior management, work skills and life management training. Clients will also participate in group work, counseling and chores. I noticed that biblical principles are central to their teaching as they relate to family and work relationships.

The facility sits in a peaceful setting with an onsite chapel and spaces for recreation and peer support. They address the root causes of addiction to create lasting recovery, emphasizing personal transformation beyond purely medical approaches.

Peaceful Mountain Setting

The center is located off Interstate 77 in a rural area of Princeton, about five miles from the downtown area near the Appalachian Mountains. Several local parks, including Glenwood Park and Mercer County Park offer access to outdoor spaces that support healing and reflection in recovery.
