About UofL Health – Chestnut Street Outpatient Center

University of Louisville Physicians Outpatient Center is a large medical hub right in downtown Louisville in Kentucky. They offer outpatient care for a wide range of mental health and addiction issues. It’s part of the university’s Health Sciences Campus and has access to research, specialized clinicians and cross-disciplinary treatment.

Covering a Lot of Ground

Their addiction services are outpatient only, but they cover a lot of ground like substance use disorders, mood disorders, and even psycho-oncology. They’re also a teaching site so that psychiatry residents rotate through here to gain experience in telemedicine and addiction psychiatry under the guidance of specialists like Dr. Chris Stewart, who heads the Addictions Program and has been vocal about the urgent need for better addiction treatment training.

The clinic serves mostly adults, with dedicated services for older adults, and they accept referrals from inpatient or residential facilities. Their team includes CADC-certified counselors and board-certified psychiatrists who are familiar with co-occurring disorders.

As far as the facility itself, it’s more than just a mental health clinic—it’s a full outpatient medical center. You’ve got an onsite pharmacy, lab testing, imaging, dental care, primary care, and even outpatient surgery and rehab services. It’s designed, in my opinion, to have just about everything you need under one roof, which can be convenient if you're juggling multiple health needs. There’s also concierge service, transportation options, and covered parking, which is a nice addition.

Payment Options & Client Feedback

They accept Medicaid, Medicare, most private insurance plans, and offer payment assistance if needed.

Reviews from patients are mixed, as some people have mentioned long wait times or tough interactions with staff, but the clinical structure and scope of services suggest it’s a place with solid resources, especially for complex cases.
