About UAB Center for Psychiatric Medicine

UAB Center for Psychiatric Medicine is located in Birmingham, Alabama. Their facility is located on the campus of the University of Alabama in a high-rise medical office building on the campus of The University of Birmingham, near the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Vulcan Park and Museum and not far from the Birmingham Zoo. They provide high quality care to address and treat your behavioral health substance use and mental health issues.

Outpatient Substance Use Disorder Care

I like that they provide initial evaluations for treatment to determine the level of care you may require. They’ll determine if your needs require acute care. They provide outpatient treatment care to adults and children. They provide services regardless of clients’ insurance status. Referrals are accepted from the court system and through other medical facilities, and they also welcome walk-ins.

Referrals for Offsite Residential Treatment Programs

Prior to entering the program, you’re first assessed with a counselor through a phone conversation who then determines the next best steps in your treatment. Each evaluation can take up to two hours. I like that there are separate evals for different age groups, including one for geriatrics.

However, you must first be diagnosed as having a substance use disorder before being admitted. I think it’s good to know that if clients don’t meet the criteria, there are options to receive interventions. They also provide referral services to outside residential treatment programs, which they do not offer at UAB.

Personal Counselor and Case Manager

Once you’re diagnosed, they’ll assign a personal case manager. In their Beacon Recovery program in a different Birmingham location, they create schedules for treatment with an assigned counselor, access to medication-based treatment care if needed, and any outside referrals for care programs not offered by UAB. They’ll essentially be your point person for access to care while in treatment at UAB.

For convenience, they offer services through telehealth utilizing secure software that helps you stay in contact with all members of your care team, including peers, case manager and counselors.
