About Selma VA Clinic
Selma VA Clinic is an outpatient medical and behavioral health center within the Veteran Affairs network that provides care for not only active and retired military personnel, but their family members in Selma, Alabama. It’s the only satellite clinic within the Tuscaloosa VA Health Care System that supports the main Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center.
All VA centers provide some form of substance use disorder treatments such as counseling but contact a patient care advocate to confirm if the Selma location offers more comprehensive SUD care. I like that this location has free parking and is fully wheelchair accessible. However, referrals are required.
Selma is a historic and major city in Alabama full of rich culture, history, and attractions. The clinic is near the iconic Edmund Pettus Bridge which is a national civil rights landmark. You can also visit the Selma City Marina and Riverfront Park for a green space.
Outpatient Addiction Treatment
The VA provides a range of drug addiction treatments and based on your initial assessment, a customized recovery plan will be recommended for you. This can include medication assisted treatment (MAT) for active addiction or even medication management if you’re experiencing co-occurring disorders.
Likewise, there are a variety of outpatient programs, such as the partial hospitalization (PHP), the intensive outpatient (IOP) and traditional outpatient programs. Lab work and a tobacco cessation program are also featured.
Helpful Referrals
Not all VA clinics provide more intensive therapeutic support for people struggling with addition. This may mean that people in active addiction may need to be referred to a residential treatment facility to help them achieve sobriety in a safe, substance free environment.
Since the VA provides both medical and behavioral health care, the best part is that you can receive comprehensive treatment for your mind and body.
I like that the VA accepts TRICARE, and there are no out of pocket expenses associated with treatment.
