About Teen Challenge
Teen Challenge is a faith-based ministry that offers discipleship programs to help people overcome addiction. The San Diego County location in San Diego, California allows adult men to go through the initial three month induction phase of the program before they are transferred to a long term center.
I think it’s important to note that Teen Challenge is not a medical or mental health program and does not have credentialed clinicians. Instead, it’s a faith based mentorship and discipleship program.
Residential Support for Overcoming Addiction
The Teen Challenge program is one year long and focuses on a curriculum of group studies from a Christian perspective. Some of the topics covered include how to change attitudes, how to manage temptation, growing through failure and successful Christian living.
I thought it was interesting that the curriculum also talks about anger and personal rights, as well as how to deal with anger in practical and healthy ways. Emotional management can be an important part of recovery. They also discuss obedience to God and authority figures, loving and accepting yourself, and developing healthy relationships.
While they don’t have clinicians, these topics are key to many recovery programs and can help residents reach long term sobriety.
GED and Vocational Skills
Along with the core curriculum, Teen Challenge provides help so residents can get their GED and learn work related skills. They have basic computer use classes and vocational training.
At the San Diego center, residents can participate in community events and supervised work opportunities which help build self esteem and a strong work ethic, which can serve them well once they graduate the program.
