About Support for Harbor Area Womens Lives

Support for Harbor Area Women's Lives (SHAWL) is a San Pedro-based residential recovery program serving homeless women affected by drug and alcohol addiction, violence and instability.

Staffed by Certified Drug & Alcohol Counselors SHAWL treats substance use alongside co-occurring mental health concerns, trauma, domestic violence, and codependency.

The program is built on a mission to help women live free from violence and build lasting self-sufficiency.

Women's Residential Addiction Recovery

I noted that the center emphasizes offering is a structured, four-month residential program serving up to 13 women at a time within a warm, nurturing setting.

Care includes intensive case management, individual counseling and weekly sessions focused on sobriety, safety, stability and self-sufficiency.

Programming draws on relapse prevention, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, art therapy, meditation and 12-Step facilitation, including AA/NA meetings and sponsor participation.

Treatment addresses both addiction and its underlying roots.

Trauma-Informed Support and Lasting Stability

Along with sobriety I found that the team provides domestic violence education, court advocacy, anger management and referrals for legal aid, healthcare, parenting and employment.

A clear step-down pathway offers up to two years of transitional housing through Haviland House and The Cottages, where residents work or attend school in drug, alcohol and violence-free environments.

Amenities

Residential Setting

Residential drug rehab provides the comforts of home with the therapeutic support needed to successfully recover. Benefits of an inpatient program include increased safety, a higher success rate, and the time and distance given to focus on recovery. Residential drug rehabs are often the preferred method of treatment, as they can be tailored to meet specific needs, offer focused therapeutic care, and provide the necessary tools to sustain recovery.

Art Therapy

Art and music are mediums that connect with our feelings, making them a great recovery tool during addiction treatment. Studies show that combining art/music and drug rehab can have a greater therapeutic impact than drug rehab alone, as you’re able to access parts of your brain and body that you may not have access to during traditional talk therapy. Benefits of art/music therapy include lowering stress and anxiety, promoting healthy neurochemicals, and providing stress relief.

Meditation Room

Yoga and meditation are great activities to support your recovery process during alcohol or drug rehab. These therapies have been around for centuries, and they are an effective way to improve well-being. Combining addiction treatment, yoga, and meditation can reduce cravings, improve sleep, relieve anxiety and depression, provide stress relief, promote relaxation, support emotional healing, and improve energy levels.
