About St Leonards House
St Leonard’s House gives men a second chance at healing, reconciliation, and renewed hope. Their interim housing program serves formerly incarcerated men largely from the South and West Side of Chicago rejoining the community from Illinois prisons. For more than 70 years, the facility has offered a safe and structured setting where these men can develop independent skills before reentry.
Fully Equipped and Accessible Residential Facility
The facility is situated Near the West Side neighborhood of Chicago and is a few miles west of downtown. I was impressed by how accessible it is. There's the Blue Line and bus routes that stop nearby. Nearby landmarks like the United Center, Humboldt Park and Skinner Park add to its charm. The facility occupies two buildings housing forty men.
The rooms hold from 1-6 residents. The facility is well-equipped with amenities that enhance comfort. These include a library, a chapel, and recreation rooms. There’s also a weight room and a laundry room with free washers and dryers. You’ll enjoy well-prepared meals three times daily in the dining room. I like that this is where they hold special events and large group gatherings.
For me, the best aspect is that you’re not charged a penny. This enables you to focus on your healing and rejoining the community. The length of stay ranges from six to nine months.
Building a Strong Recovery Foundation in a Communal Environment
The facility boasts a homely and close-knit family atmosphere where nonjudgmental understanding, honesty and openness are the guiding principles. This setting encourages men to undergo group sessions through partnerships with community services. These include substance use counseling to build coping skills and prevent relapse. You’ll also attend psychological counseling and life skill development classes.
The program also incorporates educational and vocational training to equip you with the skills necessary to reenter the workforce upon graduation. You’ll easily pick up financial and computer literacy skills. Primary healthcare services are provided onsite as needed.
The program also offers mentoring services. As you move forward in recovery, your case manager will link you to community resources that’ll enhance your smooth transition to independent living. They may help with housing placement, employment assistance, transportation, and legal services.
