About SSTARbirth

SSTAR is an organization that provides medical care and addiction treatment in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The SSTARbirth program is located in Cranston, Rhode Island, and delivers residential treatment for addiction and co occurring mental health disorders to pregnant women and mothers.

SSTAR accepts Medicaid and most private insurance plans. There is a sliding fee scale for those without insurance as well as people who can help you enroll in health coverage. No one is denied services due to inability to pay.

Residential Treatment for Mothers With Their Children

One element of the SSTARbirth program that I think is especially unique and helpful is that it allows children to live with their mothers. The program has room for 12 women and 24 children at a time. They’ve been treating women since 1994 with gender specific care that focuses on healing the mind, body and spirit.

SSTARbirth is based on the 12 steps and is an abstinence based program, meaning they help you remove all drugs and alcohol from your life. They offer individual and group therapy along with mental health evaluations and medications. Women participate in substance use and mental health education, expressive arts and trauma recovery therapy.

I noticed they have a host of other educational and support services too. There are parenting classes, health and wellness education, information about domestic violence and nutrition classes.

Support for Children During Treatment

The children who are living with their moms during treatment receive support as well. There’s early intervention services for children under age three, licensed onsite daycare services and appropriate education.

This allows children to keep up with the education and socialization appropriate to their age group while also allowing women to focus on their recovery knowing that their kids are safe and well.
