About Stepping Stone

Stepping Stone is a mental health and substance abuse treatment center that focuses on facilitating recovery for adults in distress by providing adequate housing and access to treatment resources around Denver.

The facility's website states that they accept Medicaid, grants, and private pay options. They do not, however, accept traditional forms of commercial insurance. Costs are clear, upfront, and listed directly on the facility’s website. Medicaid also does not cover sober living services.

Supportive Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Care in Denver

This facility is a Victorian era house located on Elizabeth Street and serves as a residential sober living home for 14 clients at a time. I noticed that this particular location is one of the sober living homes but it’s part of the organization called Sobriety House which has other levels of care too.

There are two main programs offered at the location are intensive residential treatment and transitional outpatient treatment. The intensive outpatient program helps those in the sober living home seek accountability, find ongoing support, and connect with the right resources they need to stay healthy.

Typically, residents will attend about 36 group sessions over the course of 12 weeks. They’ll also have access to individual therapy on a weekly or twice weekly basis.

Once residents graduate from this phase, they can move on to transitional outpatient treatment. These clients typically attend two hour sessions every week as they transition back into their regular lifestyle.

Healing the Denver Community Since 1978

One thing that I find great about this facility is that it’s located in the Capitol HIll area of Denver, which is just a short walk away from restaurants, beautiful natural getaways, and other amenities. The Denver Botanical Gardens, for example, is a great place to visit and enjoy sober living.

The facility is also nearby York Street Club, a community resource that many clients take advantage of while recovering at Stepping Stone. At this club, clients can participate in group meetings, get educated on important recovery topics, and take advantage of peer support.

This facility was established in 1978, but its roots go all the way back to 1967 when Reverend Ernest Baber opened up Sobriety House to serve the poor and alcohol addicted community members.
