About Shalom House – Park Street
The Shalom House of Portland, Maine, is a community-oriented organization that has set out to support those with mental health concerns, addiction, and/or co-occurring disorders. While the bulk of their programs focus on improving quality of life for those with a mental health diagnosis, their Bridging Residential Assistance Program is open to those with a co-occurring substance use disorder. However, their Park Street address is closed.
Shalom House’s intention goes beyond helping individuals to strengthen communities as a whole through integration support. They also help train professionals working with adults living with severe mental illness. They still have a facility on Gilman Street.
What is BRAP?
The Bridging Residential Assistance Program is a state funded program providing rental subsidies. I saw that the goal is to help individuals with severe mental illness and co-occurring addiction achieve stable housing to support their independence in the community and reduce stress on community housing programs. I also noticed BRAP is available in York and Cumberland counties.
Independent Apartments
Shalom House has a separate program using its own apartment buildings. These locations combine independence and self-sufficiency with direct access to resources designed to support ongoing recovery from mental health concerns. This isn’t a subsidy like BRAP and thus is more limited in terms of availability but remains an option for those who can financially support themselves in recovery.
