About Second Nature Therapeutic Wilderness Program

Second Nature Therapeutic Wilderness Program in Duchesne, Utah, offers camp-style treatment for children and adolescents who are struggling with mental health conditions and substance use disorders (SUD). Since 1998, they’ve offered an intensive, therapeutic experience that uses hiking as the primary treatment model.

While they offer a multitude of different services like psychological testing, enhanced family therapy and parenting coaching, their main focus is helping kids and teens reconnect with the natural world as they heal from the inside out.

This program is truly unique because it harnesses the healing power of nature to help clients work through their emotional and behavioral struggles. You’ll engage in low-impact hiking for three to five days each week, covering about one to four miles daily. Layover days are reserved for therapeutic activities like individual and group therapy as well as medical visits. Fresh food and laundry are also delivered at this time.

Basically, this is a camp with a community structure. When you’re not hiking, you’ll be responsible for helping with the chores, engaging with your peers and completing teamwork initiatives. There’s also plenty of time for reading, completing assignments and enjoying downtime.

Located about 80 miles from Park City, Duchesne is the ideal place to go on an adventure like this. You’ll hike around different sections of the Colorado Plateau, including the High Uintas or the Uinta Basin, depending on the season, and both sites offer amazing views. The facility itself has basecamps at its centrally located field area, which allows necessary supplies to be delivered and gives campers space to relax and recharge.
