About SAARA of Virginia
The Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance (SAARA) of Virginia in Richmond advocates for, educates, and supports communities, families, and clients who have been affected by the disease of addiction and substance use disorders.
Their mission is to offer hope, education, and advocacy for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of addiction, and I think it’s valuable that they address so many aspects of the addiction crisis. Communities and clients are provided with knowledge, support, and resources for lasting recovery.
Substance Use and Addiction Trainings
A special effort is made for populations underrepresented such as minorities, the LGBTQIA+ community, pregnant people and new mothers, and students. Training sessions are offered for adults who are in recovery from substance use to be a peer mentor for struggling individuals.
Another training session is for peer recovery specialists regarding ethical decisions. Revive! training teaches harm reduction through Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education (OONE). The Advocacy 101 training uses storytelling to seek policy changes in legislation that benefits recovery.
Resources and Referrals through SAARA
The organization has compiled a number of resources and is able to make referrals for mental health support, housing, recovery, and education. The center offers group programs, trainings, recovery support, peer mentoring, and meetings. I was glad to see that clients describe the staff as being like family and being non judgemental toward clients. Recovery luncheons and awards are frequently sponsored by SAARA.
