About Rutgers State University Counseling Center

Located in New Brunswick, New Jersey on the Rutgers campus, Rutgers University’s Counseling, Alcohol and Other Drug Assistance Program and Psychiatric Services or CAPS offers a variety of unique services to their clients. They specialize in serving Rutgers students.

Their clinic is designed to address various aspects of mental health and addiction, including co occurring conditions. Some of their services include individual therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention and psychiatric care.

Confidential Counseling for Students

I noticed a program they have called Let's Talk. It’s a program where the university has counselors in various departments and cultural centers throughout campus so students can get confidential and convenient counseling when they need it. They offer this through drop-in or scheduled appointments, with varying schedules.

They also offer Uwill, a program that provides telehealth services to students struggling with mental health issues. I find this particularly convenient, as it allows access to care even on weekends and nights.

Student Recovery Housing

They offer a Recovery Housing program that provides a supportive and substance free living environment for students recovering from substance use disorders. Established in 1988, it was the first college recovery housing program in the United States and has since become a national model.

They offer year round, on campus housing where students can live together and support each other through sobriety and academic success. To participate, you must have at least 90 days of continuous sobriety, join mutual aid groups like 12 step meetings, and have a mentor or sponsor.

The facility offers common areas, kitchens and laundry facilities. It's an unmarked building to protect the anonymity of the residents.

When treating addiction, they provide a consultation and evaluation to assess how substance misuse might be affecting your life. In addition to counseling, they offer early recovery groups and sober social activities that can make recovery enjoyable.
