About Renewal

The nonprofit Renewal is dedicated to helping the justice involved return to their communities. They offer a range of support services, including mental health and substance use disorder support and treatment. They have an outpatient clinic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It’s not too far from the Monongahela River.

While its primary focus is to help those leaving the criminal justice system, Renewal extends its substance use treatment services to anyone seeking help. In addition to their outpatient programs, they provide detox and non hospital inpatient care.

A Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Approach

Although everyone's experience with addiction differs, a common thread that unites each of us is how our behaviors influence our health and actions. Renewal's approach to treatment is based on identifying and changing those behaviors to eliminate destructive habits, including addiction.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a common method of addressing addiction. What I like about Renewal's treatment is that they incorporate journaling and personal record keeping into it. It's a great tool for keeping track of your experiences in treatment and can help shape your care plan.

Strengthening Family Relationships

When you leave incarceration, you're returning to more than your local community: you're resuming life with your family. A smooth transition is possible, but you'll likely need help to work out the problems and stressors that have arisen in your absence.

Renewal provides counseling and education to improve family relationships, including parenting education and support. There are also six months of supportive housing through Lydia's House. On top of temporary housing, this program helps you in the search for permanent housing, housing support, and daily essentials like food.

Helping You Find Your Place in the Workforce

No matter why you come to Renewal for help, they'll make sure you have the means to support yourself through vocational support. Re-entry case managers assist in resume writing, skills training, and interview preparation.

They've also partnered with the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership for the GETPAID employment training program. GETPAID gives you six months of on-the-job training with the Renewal Clean Team tending to Pittsburgh's downtown area. It's a great chance to get back to work and develop your resume. Plus, these services come with pre-employment assessments and counseling to make your future growth as seamless as possible.
