About Oyate Health Center
The Oyate Health Center, formerly known as the IHS Rapid City Service Unit, is located in Rapid City, South Dakota. I saw that the management of the clinic transitioned in 2022 to a tribally managed clinic. Today, this primary care walk in clinic is administered by the Great Plains Tribal Leaders' Health Board.
Integrative Healthcare Model
The Health Center offers an integrative healthcare model, working towards reducing health disparities and improving the wellness of tribal citizens in the region. This includes offering medical services that range from audiology and behavioral health to rehabilitation and urgent care.
Following a community needs assessment in 2019, Behavioral Health Services were expanded. Since then, patient access to mental health providers has grown the team expanded from three providers under the leadership of the Indian Health Service to 21 under the current management.
Behavioral Health Integrated with Primary Care
The behavioral health department is also included in the integrative healthcare model so that each person's primary care team includes a provider from behavioral health. Behavioral health services include addiction treatment through traditional and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs. I like that the integrated care model ensures that you receive substance abuse and mental health assessments and screening through your primary care provider.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment for Adults and Special Populations
The health center also recognizes that substance use disorders often co-occur with a mental health condition. They provide co-occurring treatment for adults, young adults, veterans and clients who have experienced trauma or sexual abuse. The center uses evidence based treatment approaches and integrates the 12 Steps alongside trauma related counseling and relapse prevention planning.
