About Progress House

Progress House is a veteran owned and operated transitional housing program in Torrance, California. They serve both veterans and civilians but focus on vets with PTSD, traumatic brain injury, substance use disorders, or other concerns. There are multiple properties, and the organization serves both men and women.

Transitional housing is not covered by health insurance, but if they refer you to treatment services, it may be covered by your insurance plan. You can talk to your provider for more information.

A Variety of Services for Veterans in Torrance

I was impressed with the variety of services the housing program includes. They administer regular drug and alcohol testing and provide referrals to multiple types of outpatient treatment.

For those involved in the justice system, Progress House can provide a court liaison and progress reports. Some residents come straight into Progress House from incarceration or as part of a diversion program.

Three Levels of Structure Depending on Need

Another part of this program that caught my eye is that they can administer three different levels of structure depending on the residents’ needs.

The normal level includes specific rules such as curfew, accountability, informing the staff about where they are outside the home, attending 12 Step and house meetings, and substance testing.

The monitored level includes the standards listed above as well as pre-established and verifiable itineraries whenever the resident leaves the house, which are monitored by the staff. This is helpful for those who need a more restrictive environment but are working or have appointments away from Progress House.

Finally, the lockdown level includes the conditions from both levels above, except that the resident cannot leave the property for any reason unless a staff member or Progress House representative is with them. This provides alternative custody arrangements or support for those with a high relapse risk.
