About Osage Nation – Primary Residential Treatment Center
The Osage Nation Primary Residential Treatment Center of Pawhuska, Oklahoma offers a 60 day residential program for Native Americans suffering from alcohol and drug dependency and co occurring mental health conditions. Funded by government resources, it provides no cost treatment to all adults eligible for Indian Health Services.
Culturally Relevant Rehab
Emphasizing the importance of cultural connection and fellowship in the recovery process, the facility integrates the 12 step program with culturally relevant practices. They utilize “The Red Road to Wellbriety,” a sobriety and wellness workbook for Native Americans, and are in the process of being certified under this program.
Special populations served include seniors, pregnant or postpartum women, and clients referred from the judicial system. They provide separate facilities for men and women, the Pawhuska location being a homelike residence with shared bedrooms for women.
Evidence Based Therapy Combined With Cultural Activities
Through individual and group therapy, the program uses modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). We respect that relapse prevention is a priority, as well as education on alcohol and substance use and life skills development. Anger management groups are included, as are cultural activities like drum making and sweat lodges. Meals at the home are served family style, promoting a community environment.
Local Resources to Complement Treatment
The nearby Osage Nation Museum offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in Osage history and culture. In addition to various parks and community resources, the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve provides a serene natural environment for reflection and outdoor activities. These local options have the potential to support your healing and complement your therapy.
Cultural Integration Meets Personalized Care
We were glad to see that clients praise the center for its cultural integration and personalized care. One calls out the spiritual aspect as a significant strength of the program. Another highlights the dedication of the counselors and staff. Stacy Lookout, the director of the program, describes their work as incorporating “Native American values and culture with evidence-based treatment to offer a culturally competent treatment experience.”
