One thing that caught my eye is the amount of support they have for families. They offer counseling and school based services for children and youth to help them address risky behaviors and mental health concerns.
There’s also a program called Kentucky Moms Maternal Assistance Toward Recovery (KY-Moms) that helps pregnant and parenting women with substance use education, treatment services, financial and housing resources, transportation assistance, and case management services.
They sometimes even have community baby showers! I thought this was an impressive program that really helps new moms establish independence and a healthy living situation for themselves and their children.

The NorthKey clinic offers outpatient substance use treatment, including an intensive outpatient program (IOP). What I noticed is that there’s a big focus on developing important skills that goes beyond coping mechanisms and relapse prevention.
The NorthKey program specifically focuses on leisure time skill development. This is so important because substance use often consumes all of your time. When you break free, it can be hard to know what to do instead, which can lead to relapse.
Instead, the clinic helps you find positive activities that you enjoy that are substance free. That helps you break the association between having fun and substance use. Finding these activities is essential to maintaining and enjoying long term recovery.
The program also helps you with anger management, assertiveness, and managing emotions in healthy ways. When you finish treatment, they have group therapy aftercare to allow you to reinforce your new skills.
