People searching no cost recovery support in the Ohio Valley got a closer view of local options this week. The LifeHub Homeless Shelter and Service Hub in Wheeling, West Virginia held a community event and it brought people together around recovery, and connected them with local providers.
The event wrapped up National Recovery Month with a community cookout where attendees could eat, meet individuals in recovery and discover free resources in the area, with representatives from different Ohio Valley centers answered questions in person.
Why Community Events Matter
Walking into a clinic can feel like a major hurdle, especially when you’re homeless, newly sober or unsure how to ask for help. Event organizer Ryan Adams drew from his own recovery when he spoke about that fear, and the need to make change feel possible.
“The possibility of being successful is real” Adams said. He described the event as a way to replace fear with hope.
Erica Herman of Youth Services System focused on another barrier, connection. “Connection is the opposite of addiction” she said, while pointing out that people can’t find services if they don’t know those services exist.
That visibility gap affects people without stable housing or insurance in particular. Someone can’t use a resource they’ve never heard about and shame can make reaching out even harder.
Who Can Get Free or Low Cost Treatment
The resources at the event focused on people that assume treatment sits out of reach. That includes uninsured and underinsured residents, people leaving shelters, or street situations and people early in recovery who need support.
Several volunteers also brought personal experience to the conversation. An MHT supervisor said he has seven years in recovery, and now helps provide some of the resources that supported him. People in early sobriety need support when things go wrong too he said.

Art Brings People Together
Local artist Ryan Ewing brought a Tree of Life painting to the event and invited attendees to sign it. The gesture gave people another way to take part in the recovery community.
