How Syracuse Teen Challenge Funds Free Treatment
To keep the doors open, staff and residents sell handmade wooden cutting boards at Destiny USA mall and other locations across the state. A single fundraising run in Albany recently raised $7,000.
That money matters. Program Development Coordinator Daniel Pacana, himself a program graduate, put it plainly, without consistent fundraising, the program could close.
Because Syracuse Adult and Teen Challenge declines federal funding and insurance reimbursement to preserve its religious mission, community donations and product sales are the financial lifeline for everyone enrolled in inpatient rehab.
Who Qualifies for Free or Low-Cost Treatment
There are no financial requirements to enter the program. Staff member and former resident Kyle Copeland, who spent $35,000 out of pocket on traditional rehab in just three months before finding Teen Challenge, now helps run the fundraising table specifically for people who have no options left.
“Teen Challenge accepts the guys that most people have rejected,” Copeland said. Resident Joshua Sosa arrived at 22, homeless and out of options. He couldn’t pay for rehab.
“When I came in homeless and everything, this was a place of physical refuge and spiritual refuge,” he said.
The program reports a 78% long-term recovery success rate, compared to national averages that sit in the single digits.
What the Program Provides
Syracuse Adult and Teen Challenge offers a residential faith-based recovery program built around a whole-person model.
Pacana, who was prescribed opiates at 17 and developed a heroin addiction by 34, described the program’s philosophy, “The whole change for a whole person, to make a person whole, starts at the heart.”
Resident Rich Ananias, who spent 11 years in active addiction before entering the program eight months ago, now serves as resident life supervisor to support those in need of rehab treatment.
He described what newcomers typically experience: “From the moment they got in here, experiencing the love and grace from the leaders, seeing them transform is the most rewarding thing.”
