Families searching for free rehabs in Georgia have a no cost option this fall in Statesboro. Eastern Heights Baptist Church will host “It’s a Family Affair: Confronting the Family Skeletons” on Saturday, October 24, from 7 to 9 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Families can also use the free childcare program for children from birth through fifth grade.
For anyone who loves someone with a substance use disorder, the event offers something a treatment directory cannot.
It gives families plain language for discussing difficult experiences. Two authors will lead the talks and draw from personal and professional experience with addiction trauma and recovery.
Two Talks on Family Struggle
Jonathon M. Seidl will present “Confronting Your Past in Your Present for a Better Future.” Seidl will draw from his experiences with family dysfunction, mental health issues and unhealthy coping strategies.
He will explain how unresolved parts of our stories can continue to shape relationships choices and futures.
Seidl is a bestselling author and founded Veritas Recovery. The nonprofit ministry focuses on faith addiction recovery and mental health.
He also serves as the Life Recovery pastor at Rockhill Baptist Church in Brownsboro Texas. His books include Finding Rest and Confessions of a Christian Alcoholic.
Caroline Beidler MSW will deliver the second talk “How to Love Someone Who Struggles.” Her presentation addresses what happens when another person’s struggle affects you.
It also explores what you can do when a loved one refuses or simply cannot yet recognize that something is wrong.
Beidler is an author and recovery advocate. She serves as the Managing Editor of Recovery.com and has written three books including Downstairs Church You Are Not Your Trauma and When You Love Someone in Recovery: A Hopeful Guide for Understanding Addiction.
What the Talks Will Cover
According to the event description the evening will address how to:
Recognize the obvious and socially acceptable ways people hide cope escape and seek control
Admit when a pattern pain or behavior has more influence than you want to acknowledge
Understand how family dysfunction, mental health and past experiences shape the present without using them to excuse choices
Respond with wisdom and compassion when someone admits they are struggling
Offer support without enabling controlling shaming or abandoning healthy boundaries
Build relationships where honesty meets both grace and truth
The event description presents struggle as something universal. “We all struggle and we will all love someone who does.”
Who This Free Event Is For
Celebrate Recovery and the church’s women’s ministry Daughters of the King host the event. It welcomes neighbors friends and family members of people who struggle. The event does not focus only on people in recovery.
That focus matters in a region where formal treatment can cost a lot and subsidized programs may have waitlists. Families can use this event as an accessible starting point while they explore other forms of support.
