Program Offers Free Sober Housing for Women in Greater Boston

Women looking for free rehabs or low-cost recovery housing in the Greater Boston area now have a faith-based nonprofit on their side.

Ruth’s Way for Women provides MASH-certified sober homes, recovery coaching, and wellness training at little to no cost, filling a critical gap for women who lack the financial resources to access traditional residential treatment.

What Is Ruths Way for Women

Founded in 2014, Ruth’s Way for Women is a faith-based nonprofit that has grown from advocacy and public speaking into a full network of women’s recovery services, including sober living homes, recovery coaching and recovery-based training and education.

Executive Director Nicole O’Brien launched the organization after recognizing a pattern she had witnessed firsthand. She observed that when men transitioned out of addiction programs, they often secured well-paying jobs and stable sober housing.

In contrast, women frequently left with minimum-wage work and returned to unhealthy living situations because they had no other options. Ruth’s Way was built specifically to change that outcome.

Free and Low-Cost Sober Housing for Women

Ruth’s Way operates MASH-certified sober homes in Wakefield and Lynn, Massachusetts, designed to promote independent living in a structured family environment.

Residents are expected to participate in AA/NA or Smart Recovery meetings, submit to regular drug and alcohol analysis, and work, study or volunteer while living in the home.

Since opening in December 2016, over 300 women have lived in Ruth’s Way homes. Some residents have stayed for multiple years to establish a strong foundation, build autonomy, and achieve long-term stability.

The program’s model goes well beyond simply keeping women sober. Ruth’s Way provides person-centered services focused on whole health and wellness, including addiction therapy, consulting, workshops and sober housing, with a case management approach grounded in each woman’s individual strengths and needs.

Who Qualifies and How to Access These Resources

Ruth’s Way serves women in recovery from substance use disorders who are ready to live independently in a structured, supportive setting.

Women in a partial hospitalization program (PHP), those working or in school, and those volunteering, including women who are not yet able to hold a job due to physical or mental health needs, are all eligible to apply for housing.

Recovery Coaching and Community Training

O’Brien is a certified addictions recovery coach and supervisor in Massachusetts, and she teaches others to become recovery coaches as well.

Ruth’s Way has received grant funding to go into churches and businesses to educate communities about addiction and recovery, helping employers recognize signs of substance use disorder and become part of the solution.

Ruth’s Way’s sober living model is structured around SAMHSA’s eight dimensions of wellness meaning residents receive support not just for sobriety but for their overall physical, emotional, social and financial health.
