Mothers in Southern Indiana who cannot afford addiction treatment have new reason for hope. Family Ark is a Jeffersonville nonprofit that received a federal grant exceeding $2.6 million to expand residential treatment that keeps mothers and children together.
This model removes the cost barrier, while also easing the fear that seeking treatment could lead to losing your children.

What the Grant Funds
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded the five year grant on September 8. Family Ark will use the funding to expand its Lotus House substance use disorder program and renovate buildings.
The organization will also create a dedicated child care space and add a 30 to 45 day higher level of care. This expansion will allow women to receive more intensive treatment without separating from their children.
Participants in Lotus House typically live at Family Ark’s 83 acre Jeffersonville campus for about six months. They complete nine hours of programming each week that includes case management medication-assisted treatment support safe sleep education and parenting instruction.
Family Ark also provides foster care in home services outpatient behavioral health and transitional living. These additional services give families access to support at different stages of recovery.
Why This Matters in Indiana
The need remains severe. Drug overdose and substance use rank as the leading cause of death among new mothers in Indiana.
They account for roughly one third of deaths during pregnancy and through the first year after birth according to the Indiana Maternal Mortality Review Commission.
State policy researchers estimate that 70 to 77 percent of maternal deaths in Indiana could receive prevention.
An Indiana University analysis found that more than 7100 Indiana children left their homes in 2024 through the child welfare system. About 57 percent of those removals involved a parent who abused alcohol or drugs.
Programs like Lotus House address this intersection directly. They treat the mother while helping keep the family together. They can also reduce the risk of another generation entering foster care.

Family Ark’s expanded program must first complete certification through the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction before it can open.
Indiana also operates the Pregnancy Promise Program. This free voluntary service helps eligible pregnant and postpartum Medicaid members affected by substance use disorders. The program connects participants with treatment during pregnancy and for up to 12 months after childbirth.
