Idaho Rehab Now Accepts Medicaid: Free & Low-Cost Treatment in Boise

Boise-area residents who have been putting off addiction treatment because of cost now have a new option.

Icarus Wellness & Recovery, a Joint Commission-accredited rehab center in Boise, Idaho, announced it is now accepting most forms of Idaho Medicaid alongside many major commercial insurance plans.

Treatment could cost little to nothing for those who qualify. For the roughly 400,000 Idahoans enrolled in Medicaid, this removes one of the biggest barriers to getting help, which is the bill.

Who Qualifies for Free or Low-Cost Treatment at Icarus?

If you have Idaho Medicaid, including coverage through Idaho’s Medicaid expansion program, you may now be eligible for fully covered addiction treatment at Icarus Wellness & Recovery at no out-of-pocket cost.

You may qualify for Idaho Medicaid if you:

  1. Are a low-income adult earning at or below 138% of the federal poverty level
  2. Are pregnant, disabled, or caring for dependent children with limited income
  3. Already receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Not sure if you’re enrolled? You can check your eligibility or apply at YourHealthIdaho.org or by calling 1-800-926-2588. Enrollment is open year-round for most qualifying individuals.

If you have commercial insurance, Icarus accepts many major in-network plans as well. Even with private insurance, your out-of-pocket rehab costs may be significantly lower than you expect.

This is particularly the case under plans that comply with the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which requires insurers to cover addiction treatment comparably to other medical care.

How to Access Free or Low-Cost Rehab in Idaho

Getting started is simpler than most people realize. Here’s what to do:

Step 1: Verify your coverage. Contact Icarus Wellness & Recovery’s admissions team directly to confirm your Medicaid plan or commercial insurance is accepted. They can walk you through covered services and the intake process at no obligation.

Step 2: If you don’t have Medicaid, apply now. Idaho expanded Medicaid in 2020. Many low-income adults who previously had no coverage now qualify. Apply at YourHealthIdaho.org or through your local Department of Health and Welfare office.

Step 3: If you don’t qualify for Medicaid, explore other free options. Idaho has state-funded and SAMHSA-supported treatment programs available on a sliding scale or at no cost. See the Free Resources section below.

What Kind of Treatment Does Icarus Offer?

Icarus Wellness & Recovery provides evidence-based, individualized treatment for substance use disorders and dual diagnosis.

Programs are clinically guided with a focus on stabilization, skill-building and long-term recovery. The same quality of care typically associated with private-pay treatment, now accessible to Medicaid beneficiaries.

“Treatment access should not depend on whether someone can pay out-of-pocket,” said Abigail Miller, a spokesperson for Icarus. The expansion, she noted, is designed so people can focus on recovery rather than paperwork or financial stress.

Finding Affordable Rehab Beyond Boise

Even if Icarus isn’t the right fit, Idahoans have other avenues for free and low-cost treatment:

  2. Contact SAMHSA’s free national helpline at 1-800-662-4357 (1-800-662-HELP), available 24/7 in English and Spanish. They can connect you with free or low-cost programs in your area.
