Getting help with addiction doesn’t always start with a phone call to a rehab. Sometimes it starts with a free bowl of soup and a conversation.
The Center for Family Life and Recovery (CFLR) will host its third annual “Hope in a Bowl of Soup” event in Rome, New York on Oct 23. Residents can get a free meal as well as an opportunity to connect with local recovery resources.
The event will last from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at CFLR’s Rome office at 201 W. Dominick St. Anyone can attend at no cost. You can get soup, baked goods and conversations about recovery all for free.
Who Can Access Free Recovery Support?
The cost of addiction treatment keeps most people from seeking treatment. Community recovery organizations provide assistance reducing that barrier by connecting people with support and services that they can afford.
“Hope in a Bowl of Soup” welcomes people in recovery. Loved ones who want to help, recovery professionals and anyone curious about local resources can also attend.
There’s no requirement to provide proof of insurance or commit to treatment. You’ll get to talk with people who understand the local recovery system. Additionally you’ll learn what options might fit your situation.
The event is supported by Erin’s Light. It’s a recovery initiative established in memory of Erin, who died in 2019 after struggling with addiction. It honors her memory by funding recovery support and helping people find hope and connection.
How the Event Connects People With Help
When people come to the event, they’ll get to share soup and baked goods while learning about recovery services throughout the area.
The relaxed setting gives people a chance to ask questions without any pressure of having to call a helpline or walk into a treatment clinic.
Katie Rodriguez, CFLR’s director of recovery services, said the organization holds the event each year around Erin’s birthday. What began as a way to honor Erin has grown into a community tradition that brings people together through kindness, hope and connection.
The gathering also coincides with Red Ribbon Week, a national drug prevention awareness campaign.
This year’s theme, “Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free,” encourages families, schools and communities to promote healthy, substance-free lifestyles.
How to Find Local Recovery Resources
Can’t make it? CFLR’s recovery services can help you find ongoing support. Similar nonprofit organizations across New York also connect residents with local recovery programs and other resources.
