For women who cannot afford traditional rehab, a free women’s recovery program in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is proof that cost does not have to be the thing that keeps you out of treatment.
Guiding Light, a faith-based nonprofit, is marking two years of its women’s program and expanding into a new space that will let it offer more services, according to local reporting from WOOD TV.
The headline detail matters most to readers worried about money: the program is offered at no cost to participants.
Who Qualifies for Free or Low-Cost Treatment
Guiding Light’s women’s program is residential. Participants live at a home called Kendra’s House, named in honor of a woman who lost her life to alcohol addiction, for about four to six months.
The program leans on trauma-informed care, peer support, therapy, spiritual reflection and group and physical activities.
Over two years, the program has served 147 women, and about 96% of them reported experiencing some form of abuse, the organization said.
A program leader put the philosophy simply: “We really value just seeing women come through the doors, whether they complete the program or not.”
How to Access These Free Resources
Because Guiding Light is donor funded, there is no health insurance hurdle and no bill at the end. Women interested in the program can reach out through the organization’s website or by phone at 616.881.4790 to ask about openings and whether the program is a fit.
One participant who spent more than three months in the program said community was the key to her recovery, and that group and physical activities helped her see that life can be full without alcohol.
Free and Low-Cost Rehabs Beyond One Program
A single nonprofit cannot meet every need, and you do not have to be in Grand Rapids to find affordable help. If cost is your main barrier, practical next steps include:
- checking whether your state’s Medicaid program covers rehab and detox
- searching for free or sliding-scale treatment centers near you
- asking nonprofits and faith-based programs whether they offer scholarships or donor-funded beds
