Families struggling with teen addiction in New Braunfels, Texas, can now access free rehabs-level support through Recovery Werks, a local nonprofit offering counseling, coaching and peer recovery groups at no cost to families.
For parents who can’t afford private treatment, it may be the most important resource in Comal County. The need is real.
State data from Texas Health and Human Services shows children as young as 10 are already experimenting with drugs, nicotine and alcohol.
Recovery Werks has been on the front lines of that crisis for a decade, and a new partnership with the county’s juvenile probation and court systems is expanding access even further.
Who Qualifies for Free Teen Recovery Services
Recovery Werks operates as a 12-step program specifically designed for adolescents and their families in the New Braunfels area. Services are free thanks to donor funding and, as of February 2025, a formal partnership with Comal County’s juvenile probation and court systems.
Program Director Zach Saunders estimates that roughly 90% of the teens he works with in Comal County have already been caught with drugs or alcohol at least once.
The program serves families at all income levels, but its no-cost model is especially critical for those who cannot afford private rehab centers.
“I think the average family probably [would find it] difficult,” said Nancy, a Recovery Werks parent whose daughter entered the program two and a half years ago after becoming addicted to THC through vaping. “For the amount of hours that they spend in recovery, that would be very expensive.”
Nancy asked that her full identity not be revealed to protect her teen. Her daughter is now in sustained recovery and has returned to help other teens in the program.
How to Access Support Through Recovery Werks
Recovery Werks offers a range of services at no charge to families, including:
- Individual and family coaching
- Licensed counseling
- Parent support groups
- Sober social activities
- Recovery retreats
The nonprofit is located in New Braunfels and serves Comal County. Families can self-refer or teens may be referred through Comal County’s juvenile probation and court systems under the new 2025 partnership.
Since opening in 2016 with just 20 families, Recovery Werks has grown dramatically, serving 573 people in 2023 and more than 400 in each of the past two years.
Saunders says it remains one of the only programs in the area offering this level of intensive outpatient support for teens.

One of the biggest barriers to accessing free treatment isn’t cost, it’s shame.
“There is a stigma involved,” Nancy said. “I know the very first time I came into this building I was running from the parking lot into the building because I didn’t want anybody to know that I was here.”
Her advice to other parents, don’t let that fear stop you. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
