Women in Abilene, Texas who need a free place to live in early recovery now have an option that did not exist a few weeks ago.
Esther Abilene, a new faith-based ministry and extension of Nehemiah Abilene, opened a sober living home with five beds currently available. The ministry’s larger 28-bed residential facility is still under construction and the need, as founder Cara Poe puts it, is immediate.
“Women need help now,” Poe said. “And since we won’t be open for a while, we were excited when we were able to partner with Next Step Development.”
Who Esther Abilene Serves
The ministry’s mission is focused, and Poe describes the goal as bringing women out of poverty and drug addiction, out of incarceration and violent criminal life and restoring them to their families and communities through a yearlong residential program built on faith.
The model pairs housing stability with structure, work and spiritual support.
Poe speaks from personal experience.
Sober living homes fill a gap that formal treatment often leaves open because after detox or a residential stay, many people have nowhere stable to return.
A sober living home provides a drug-free environment, house expectations, and peer accountability at a fraction of residential treatment cost. In Abilene, where treatment options are limited compared with Texas metro areas, five beds is a small number that still changes the math for five women.
The Bigger 28-Bed Facility Still to Come
The five-bed home is a bridge project and the flagship facility remains under construction with a $1.1 million fundraising goal, and donations are being accepted through the ministry’s website.
When it opens, the 28-bed home will offer a yearlong program designed for women rebuilding lives after addiction and incarceration.
For families in West Texas who are evaluating low-cost rehabs, the distinction matters. Sober living is housing with recovery support and it is not clinical treatment. Women who need medical detox or medication for opioid or alcohol use disorders still need a treatment program first, with sober living as the next step.
