Free Rides to Rehab Centers Now Available in Mid-Michigan

A new free transportation program is removing one of the most overlooked barriers keeping rural residents from reaching rehab centers near them, the simple problem of getting there.

The Rural Recovery Transportation program, rolling out across Huron, Tuscola and Saginaw counties in Mid-Michigan, provides rides to people in recovery so they can access meetings, medication-assisted treatment (MAT) services, and, in some cases, gas cards.

For people in rural areas without a car or reliable transit, this kind of free resource can be the difference between getting help and falling through the cracks.

Why Transportation Stops People from Reaching Free Rehabs

Distance is rarely discussed as a treatment barrier, but in rural communities it’s often the deciding factor. “It can be the difference between someone finding recovery or someone falling through the cracks,” said Tracy Madden, program manager at Peer 360 Recovery Alliance.

What looks like a manageable drive on a map can be an impossible trip for someone without access to a car, who can’t afford a rideshare, or who lives far from public transit.

Madden emphasized that connecting people to the recovery community is often the first step: “If they can get connected to the recovery community, then maybe, just maybe, they’ll start thinking, ‘maybe I can do this too.'”

Low-cost rehabs and free programs already exist in many communities, but they do no good if someone can’t physically get there.

Who Can Use This Free Program

The program is funded through Mid-State Health Network and is designed primarily for residents of Huron, Tuscola and Saginaw counties. Rides must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. City residents, not only those in rural areas, can also use the service.

The program covers transportation to:

  1. Recovery meetings
  2. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) appointments
  3. Recovery events and community programs
  4. Gas card assistance for some participants

There is no cost to participants. According to Madden, the goal is to help people in rural areas understand “that recovery exists outside their little slice of the cornfield.”

How to Access Free Rehabs and Recovery Resources Near You

If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction and cost or transportation is a barrier, you don’t have to face it alone. Free and low-cost rehabs exist across Michigan and nationwide. Here are some steps you can take right now:

  1. Call SAMHSA’s National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 — free, confidential, 24/7, available in English and Spanish
  2. Check if your state offers Medicaid coverage for rehab — most states cover inpatient and outpatient treatment at low or no cost
  3. Ask about sliding-scale fees — many nonprofit rehab centers charge based on income, meaning treatment may cost little or nothing
  4. Contact your county health department — programs like this one in Mid-Michigan are often run locally and not widely advertised
