Free Rehab Center for Families Opening in Washington State’s Tri-Cities

Washington State residents searching for free rehabs near them are getting a major new option this spring.

The Columbia Valley Center for Recovery in Kennewick is set to open its doors to anyone who needs help, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay.

The facility, located in the former Kennewick General Hospital on South Auburn Street, is the Tri-Cities’ first inpatient addiction treatment center after more than seven years of community planning.

It is operated by Comprehensive Healthcare, a Yakima-based nonprofit, and is funded largely through local and state public money.

What Makes This a Free Rehab Option

The Columbia Valley Center for Recovery is explicitly designed as a “no wrong door” treatment center. Anyone with a need will be served regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay.

That’s a significant promise in a region where people have previously had to travel hundreds of miles out of town, sometimes out of state, to access inpatient care.

Operational funding will be paid for through mental health and chemical dependency sales taxes in Benton and Franklin counties, as well as supplemented by state opioid lawsuit settlement payments.

This public funding structure is what makes it possible to treat patients without turning anyone away at the door.

Services Available at No Cost

The center will offer a tiered range of services when it opens: A 23-hour observation unit will focus on stabilization and sobering, with patients assessed to determine further care needs.

A crisis stabilization unit is designed for those whose primary diagnosis is mental illness related, with typical stays of five days or fewer.

A withdrawal management unit will provide secure detox services at two levels, one with patient-administered medication and monitoring, and another with 24-hour medical care from nurses and doctors.

A residential substance use treatment unit will offer longer-term recovery support based on ongoing treatment assessments.

The residential wing is planned to open in May, with crisis stabilization and sobering services coming online through June, and withdrawal management beds opening in phases through July.

Who Qualifies for Free or Low-Cost Treatment

Because this is a publicly owned facility, services are available to anyone who is able to come in, with no geographic restriction despite being owned by Benton County.

The facility will accept walk-in patients voluntarily and can also receive people brought in by law enforcement or under court order.

This model is especially meaningful for uninsured people in crisis. Police and emergency responders will be able to bring individuals directly to the center rather than defaulting to the county jail.

It’s a pattern that has historically affected people with addiction and mental health disorders who lack insurance.

Finding Affordable Treatment Beyond Washington

The opening of this facility reflects a nationwide push to fill gaps in publicly funded addiction care. Federal programs like SAMHSA grants, state opioid settlement funds and Medicaid expansion have created more free rehab options than many people realize.

Medicare also covers a range of addiction treatment services for those 65 and older or with qualifying disabilities.
