A faith-based nonprofit in Raleigh County, West Virginia is growing its free rehab program after breaking ground on a new residential facility, offering hope to people in one of the states hardest hit by the addiction crisis.
Brian’s Safehouse, a long-term recovery program in Prosperity, WV, recently broke ground on “Cormie’s Cottage,” a new men’s residential building that will house 8–12 additional recovery residents.
The new facility effectively doubles the size of the organization’s existing 12-month residential program, all at no cost to participants.
“Really, it’s exciting to me to know that this adds another step of accountability and a safety net,” said Leslie Pease, Communications Director for Brian’s Safehouse.
Who Qualifies for Free or Low-Cost Treatment at Programs Like This?
Faith-based and nonprofit free rehabs like Brian’s Safehouse typically serve individuals who are uninsured, underinsured, or simply unable to afford traditional treatment. Most programs prioritize people who are:
- Experiencing homelessness or housing instability
- Uninsured or ineligible for Medicaid
- Struggling with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders
- Living in rural or underserved communities
Cormie’s Cottage was made possible through the Momentum Initiative Grant from the West Virginia First Foundation (WVFF), a nonprofit focused on combating addiction statewide. Grant-funded facilities like this one often have no out-of-pocket cost for residents.
“It’s the start of an opportunity here. It’s evidence of impact, and a meaningful change for this community,” said Rachel Thaxton, Director of Operations for WVFF.
How to Access These Resources
If you or a loved one is searching for low-cost options in West Virginia or elsewhere, here are concrete steps to take today:
- Call SAMHSA’s National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 (free, confidential, 24/7). They can connect you with state-funded and sliding-scale programs in your area.
- Check Medicaid rehab coverage in your state. Most states cover residential and outpatient treatment at no or very low cost for eligible individuals.
- Search for faith-based and nonprofit rehab centers in your county. Many, like Brian’s Safehouse, offer long-term free residential programs.
- Ask about sliding-scale fees or scholarships at any treatment center. Many facilities will work with you regardless of ability to pay.
- Contact your state’s substance abuse agency for a list of state-funded free rehabs in your area.
Brian’s Safehouse focuses on helping residents reintegrate into work and society over a full year, addressing what Pease calls “generational issues” with addiction.
“We’re working on generational issues with a lot, if not most of our residents, so it breaks that cycle,” Pease explained.
The facility’s long-term, residential model is exactly the kind of free rehab that research shows produces lasting recovery outcomes, something that’s often inaccessible without financial assistance.
