Free recovery support reached the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo this month when the Northeast Delta Human Services Authority hosted its fourth annual Recovery Day on Friday, September 18, 2026.
They distributed 200 free admission tickets while offering live music, food, painting games and door prizes to roughly 400 attendees.
The event costs nothing and that detail carries an important message, because access to a recovery community should not depend on whether someone can afford admission.
The Monroe event coincides with National Recovery Month, which communities across the country observe each September to promote evidence based treatment and reduce stigma surrounding mental health and substance use disorders.
In northeast Louisiana, where treatment options remain limited and transportation creates a documented obstacle, a free day at the zoo also gives people an opportunity to connect with recovery resources without having to enter a clinic.
Why Free Events Matter in Rural Louisiana
NEDHSA’s opioid use disorder manager Kara Etienne identified stigma as one of the largest obstacles that people in recovery encounter in the region.
Etienne also highlighted the challenges that geography creates. Northeast Louisiana includes many rural communities. Monroe serves as the region’s largest metropolitan area and residents who lack reliable transportation may struggle to reach treatment services there.
Free community events can bring recovery support closer to those residents and can connect with people in familiar settings, rather than expecting everyone to navigate an unfamiliar treatment system.
Attendee Chelsey Borden drew from her own recovery experience when she described the daily commitment that supports long term sobriety.
“Just one more day. Just one more day. Take it by the day and you can do it. You can” she said.
Borden also emphasized the importance of community for people who lack dependable support from relatives or friends.
“It’s important to have a community of people that can support you because some people don’t have that. Some people don’t have family around that can give them advice and stuff like that. A lot of people in recovery don’t even have their moms and dads.”
Attendee Ron S. kept the stakes clear with a simple observation. “Our friends are still out there suffering from this disease that we call addiction.”
Who Qualifies for Free or Low Cost Services
Recovery Day welcomes anyone and many other parts of Louisiana’s recovery network follow the same principle.
Peer support groups such as AA and NA offer free meetings throughout the state. State funded providers, including the human services authorities that serve Louisiana’s different regions, can offer services at reduced rates or without charge for people who meet eligibility requirements.
Medicaid also covers addiction treatment in Louisiana and the state’s Medicaid expansion has given more residents access to coverage.
NEDHSA serves as both a treatment provider and a connection point for benefits across a 12 parish region. The agency connects residents with mental health addiction and developmental disability services regardless of their ability to pay.
