Two free Narcan vending machines are now dispensing no-cost opioid overdose treatment to the public in the Texarkana area, no prescription, no insurance and no questions asked.
For people who can’t afford traditional care or who aren’t yet ready for rehab, this type of free harm reduction resource can mean the difference between life and death.
What the Narcan Vending Machines Offer
August Wooldridge of Heartstart Heroes partnered with U.T. Health in San Antonio to bring the machines to Texarkana.
One machine is located in the lobby of Randy Sams’ Outreach Center, and a second vending machine is located in New Boston, Texas, at the corner of East Hoskins and North Center streets.
The Narcan, a brand name for naloxone, a medication that rapidly reverses opioid overdose, is completely free to take. Over 600 boxes were taken during the machines’ first week of operation.
Free Narcan Is for Everyone Not Just People With Addiction
One of the most important points organizers want the public to understand is that these machines aren’t only for people struggling with substance addiction.
As Wooldridge explained, “It’s for a child who picks up a pill from the floor, your mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, who took two pain pills rather than one, so there is a potential of overdose in every community.”
Wooldridge compared Narcan to a fire extinguisher, you may not think about it until you need it, but having it on hand can save a life when a crisis occurs. His advice: pick up a box before there’s an emergency.
Why Free Harm Reduction Resources Matter
For many people searching for free rehabs near me or low-cost addiction treatment, the path to formal care isn’t immediate.
Harm reduction tools like free Narcan serve as a critical safety net, keeping people alive long enough to access treatment when they’re ready.
Jennifer Lacefield of Randy Sams’ Outreach Center said the goal is straightforward: “We want as much safety involved as possible in the unfortunate event some people make choices that is not good for them, we don’t want any lives lost.”
Wooldridge said he is exploring bringing additional Narcan vending machines to the area, though finding willing host businesses has been a challenge due to concerns about attracting the wrong crowd.
How to Access Free Overdose Prevention Resources Near You
Free Narcan and harm reduction programs are expanding across the country, and many are available at no cost regardless of insurance status. Here’s how to find free resources near you:
- Pick up free Narcan at the Randy Sams’ Outreach Center or the New Boston, Texas, location (East Hoskins and North Center streets) if you’re in the Texarkana area.
- Check your local health department — many offer free naloxone with no ID or insurance required.
- Ask about Medicaid rehab coverage — if you’re uninsured or low-income, you may qualify for Medicaid, which covers substance use treatment in most states including Texas and Arkansas.
- Look for sliding-scale rehab centers in your area that adjust fees based on your income.
