Free Naloxone Kits Now Available Statewide in Michigan

Michigan residents can now access free overdose-reversal medication at health department offices across the state, part of a growing push to put life-saving tools directly in the hands of communities hit hardest by the opioid crisis.

For people who cannot afford treatment or emergency care, free naloxone may be the first step toward survival and recovery.

Michigan Expands Free Naloxone Access

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is distributing free naloxone kits, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, at its offices statewide.

The effort is funded in part by opioid settlement dollars, with Michigan slated to receive more than $1.8 billion from national opioid settlements by 2040.

State Chief Medical Executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian credited naloxone with helping drive a 35% decrease in overdose deaths since 2023, noting that the medication “saved thousands of lives in Michigan.”

Since the 2020 launch of Michigan’s Naloxone Direct Portal, the state has distributed more than 1.7 million kits and recorded more than 34,000 overdose reversals.

Along with overdose reversal medication, you can also find a variety of free and low-cost rehab centers in Michigan.

Who Qualifies for Free Naloxone

Anyone can obtain naloxone at no cost. You do not need private insurance, a prescription or proof of income.

Michigan’s Good Samaritan Law protects anyone who administers the medication and naloxone is safe to give to people of all ages, it will not cause harm if given to someone who is not overdosing.

Community groups can also request free supplies through Michigan’s Naloxone Direct Portal, an online access point providing overdose-reversal medication at no charge.
