If you are looking for free gambling addiction recovery resources in Illinois, Gamblers Anonymous and a growing peer-led podcast are stepping in where licensed treatment options remain thin on the ground.
A joint investigation by Capitol News Illinois and the Illinois Answers Project found that Gamblers Anonymous, a free 12-step program modeled on Alcoholics Anonymous, is often the only recovery resource many compulsive gamblers in the state can find, let alone afford.
Insurance typically does not cover gambling-specific treatment unless the person also has an alcohol or drug use disorder, and gambling-certified therapists are limited statewide.
Who Qualifies for Free Gambling Recovery Support
Gamblers Anonymous meetings are free and open to anyone who wants to stop gambling, with no insurance, referral, or intake process required. Jimmy M., a Chicago-area member profiled in the reporting, found the free peer support model so valuable that he launched a companion podcast, “Gambling Recovery: Taking Back Your Life,” with certified gambling counselor Sam Sherman in February 2025.
The biweekly show interviews compulsive gamblers in recovery, family members, addiction counselors, and lawmakers, and now reaches listeners in 90 countries.
For Dave K., a recovering gambler in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, that free peer network can be the difference between stability and crisis.
“A lot of people are looking for hope, they feel helpless,” he said. “I see people coming in the room who are suicidal, who are on the verge of divorce or getting divorced, about to be evicted.”
How to Access These Resources
Illinois residents can find a Gamblers Anonymous meeting through the program’s national directory, though availability is uneven.
Chicago has at most one meeting a day within city limits, and some communities, including Chinatown, have none at all despite documented gambling activity nearby.
Outside the Chicago area, many parts of the state have access to only one meeting a week within an hour’s drive, and virtual meetings offer an alternative for people without a nearby group.
For crisis support, Illinois residents can contact the state’s gambling helpline by calling 1-800-GAMBLER or texting “GAMB” to 833234.
Payment Options Explained
Because insurance rarely covers gambling-specific counseling on its own, free peer support programs like Gamblers Anonymous fill a real gap for people who cannot pay out of pocket for a certified gambling therapist.
The reporting found that stigma and low awareness, particularly in some South and West Side Chicago neighborhoods and in immigrant communities where gambling carries different cultural meanings, compound the access problem.
Community health workers in those areas say gambling is not always recognized as an addiction, which can delay people from seeking any kind of help, free or paid.
Finding Affordable Gambling Addiction Treatment
If cost or insurance coverage has kept you from seeking help for a gambling problem, free resources exist even where formal treatment options are thin:
- Attend a free Gamblers Anonymous meeting in person or by video call
- Listen to peer-led recovery resources like the Gambling Recovery podcast for support between meetings
- Call the Illinois gambling helpline at 1-800-GAMBLER for local referrals
- Ask a primary care provider or community health worker about sliding-scale counseling if gambling occurs alongside alcohol or drug use, which may open insurance-covered treatment
