The Sunshine State is known for its white sand beaches and aquamarine blue water. But recently on a Florida beach cocaine blocks valued at nearly half a million dollars had been found washed ashore.
Florida Beach Cocaine Discovery Raises Alarm
Imagine taking a leisurely beach stroll and finding 25 mysterious bricks with a picture of Yosemite Sam on them. That’s precisely what happened to one beachgoer in Walton County on a Sunday morning walk.
But these weren’t just any bricks. The items washed ashore included 25 bricks of cocaine worth around $500,000. They’ve since been confiscated and marked as evidence by the local sheriff’s office. They are warning residents and visitors not to touch any suspicious packages and to call authorities immediately if they find similar contents.
This sighting follows another incident that happened in Baldwin County. There, 50 individually wrapped packets of cocaine washed ashore on June 26, weighing close to 110 pounds.
Once the Sheriff’s Office was contacted, officers transported the bundled items to their investigations center for further analysis. After verification, Homeland Security Investigations and the Department of Homeland Security were notified of the findings to pursue the drug trafficking case further.
The Scourge on America’s Beaches
Unfortunately, the Baldwin County Sheriff reported it is not rare or uncommon for illicit drugs to surface on the beach shores as major drug trafficking cartels continue to thrive off the US coast. He requested that the community help and contact them regarding any cocaine bundles found.
One of the dangers is exposing citizens to harmful chemicals, which can be deadly. It is best to contact law enforcement immediately without making contact with the suspicious items. Handling them can result in health and safety issues.
The discovery is one example in a flurry of documented contraband coming into the country. While many bundles have been seized, there are still shipments that go undetected and may end up on the shores of your local beach.
Luckily, numerous local, state and federal agencies are working diligently to intercept these products. But the business of selling drugs rakes in so much money for cartels that it’s nearly impossible to close all routes of entry and this is why the vigilance and cooperation of Americans from coast to coast is key.
The illicit drug trade doesn’t have to impact your life. It’s possible to break free of the bonds of addiction and help put the cartels out of business, one recovered person at a time.
