Annual 5K Proceeds Fund Free and Low Cost Rehab Programs

Free and low cost rehab programs stand to benefit from an unlikely source this month: the proceeds of an annual community 5K now in its third year. The Go the Distance run raises money for addiction recovery services, and every dollar goes toward care for people who could not otherwise afford it.

What the 5K Supports

The Go the Distance 5K brings together people in recovery, families and supporters for a community walk and run.

KOIN 6 News in Portland covered this year’s event as part of its reporting on local recovery efforts. Registration and fundraising proceeds support addiction recovery programs in the area.

After three years, the event has become part of the local recovery community. Returning participants bring friends and family which helps the race grow each year.

Community Fundraising Supports Recovery

Treatment can be expensive and public funding doesn’t cover every need. Community fundraising helps close that gap. A registration fee can help pay for a bed, counseling session or peer support meeting for someone without insurance or savings.

The 5K also brings recovery into the public eye. Participants show their support on race day while neighbors see how many people and families are affected by addiction.

Free Recovery Resources

The 5K is one part of a larger network of support outside private pay rehab. Peer support groups, recovery community organizations, harm reduction programs and nonprofit hotlines can all provide free help.

You can also find state funded programs and sliding scale clinics. Many of them accept Medicaid or Medicare insurance.
