People searching for free rehabs and no cost prevention resources in Alabama, Kansas and West Virginia now have new federal funding coming their way.
On September 15, the Department of Health and Human Services announced $500000 in supplemental funding for each state. The money will strengthen the role of faith based organizations and leaders in substance use prevention.
What the Funding Covers
The awards supplement existing Strategic Prevention Framework Partnerships for Success grants. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration or SAMHSA administers those grants.
In Kansas and West Virginia, the funding will support new partnerships between state prevention programs and faith communities.
It will also fund needs assessments and prevention strategies that faith leaders develop with youth involvement from the beginning.
In Alabama, the funding will support regional needs assessments. Those assessments will examine how faith based prevention influences youth attitudes.
The state will also use the funding to reach young people ages 12 to 17 through its certified Faith Based Support Specialists.
“Every child deserves the chance to grow up free from addiction” HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in the announcement. “Faith leaders are uniquely positioned to reach young people at a critical point in their lives.”
Why Faith Based Programs Matter for Cost
Faith based organizations have operated accessible resources for people who cannot afford treatment for many years. These resources include free rehabs and recovery residences with no or low fees. They also include prevention programs that people can join at no cost.
This funding places those community networks within the official prevention system. Families who cannot afford private care may benefit as more local options become available without direct treatment costs.
“Faith communities have been doing this work for generations walking alongside families mentoring young people helping people find purpose” said Dr. Monty Burks director of the HHS Center for Faith. “Our job is not to replace that work but to equip it.”
Who Qualifies for Free or Low Cost Treatment?
Eligibility for publicly funded prevention and treatment depends on the state and the specific program. Medicaid remains one of the most common paths to no cost addiction treatment for people with limited income. Every state also operates some form of state funded or faith based program.
If you live in Alabama, Kansas, or West Virginia this new funding should gradually expand the services that local faith partners can provide. New programs and services still need time to become operational.
