About Family & Youth Alternatives [ F Y A ]

Family and Youth Alternatives of Fresno, California provides outpatient treatment for adolescents experiencing mental health and substance use issues. Certified by the State Department of Health Care Services, they accept Medicaid and have a payment assistance plan.

They are a part of TURN Behavioral Health Services, formerly known as Mental Health Systems. Some services are available for any adolescent seeking treatment while others are specifically for those in the juvenile justice system.

Treatment Under the Matrix Model

Serving adolescents, transitional age young adults, and those referred from the courts, they offer Juvenile Drug Court and Post Release outpatient programs for those in the justice system. Therapy is based in the Matrix Model and is trauma focused, utilizing such modalities as cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and the 12 step program. I like that they also provide anger management groups, and relapse prevention planning is available here too.

Group Sessions for Teenagers

I was pleased to find that previous clients have positive things to say about the program. One client says that she was “really enjoying my group sessions.” Another client enthusiastically stated, “I love this group,” while a third reviewer complimented the great staff.

Outdoor Spaces of Fresno

Fresno is home to plenty of green spaces and outdoor activities to support your outpatient therapy. The Forestiere Underground Gardens are made up of a fascinating underground maze of patios, gardens, and grottos to explore.

Roeding Park is almost 90 acres of picnic areas, tennis courts, and horseshoe pits. It features a large lake and several small ponds perfect for serene contemplation. The Shinzen Friendship Garden is a traditional American Japanese garden where you can take a calming walk past a beautiful waterfall, a lake and many picturesque streams.

Art Therapy

Art and music are mediums that connect with our feelings, making them a great recovery tool during addiction treatment. Studies show that combining art/music and drug rehab can have a greater therapeutic impact than drug rehab alone, as you’re able to access parts of your brain and body that you may not have access to during traditional talk therapy. Benefits of art/music therapy include lowering stress and anxiety, promoting healthy neurochemicals, and providing stress relief.
