About The Harris Center Southeast Community Service Center

The Harris Center for Mental Health and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) provides mental and behavioral health care at several locations across Texas. This includes the Southeast Community Service Center in Houston. Here, they specialize in treating adolescents and adults who are struggling with behavioral health and substance use disorders.

They offer a multitude of outpatient services like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), case management, group therapy, harm reduction, supportive housing, supportive employment assistance and psychiatric services. You’ll be able to come into their office for your services and then return home. Houston is a great area to explore in your downtime, with a rich music and culinary scene, lots of professional opportunities and sprawling urban parks.

Their supportive housing program really stands out to me because homelessness and addiction can often go hand-in-hand. Having a safe and sober place to live can reduce anxiety and stress because you’ll be in a healthy, productive setting. This can also reduce your risk of relapse, improve your mental health, provide structure and give you a sense of belonging. Basically, it connects you to a community of people who are similar to you and have shared experiences.

Their supportive employment assistance program is also an asset. It helps you develop the employment and life skills you need to be successful in your career. Their staff will provide resources and training to strengthen your employment outlook. They can also assist with developing a resume and cover letter and work with you to prepare for interview questions. Sports, arts and networking are three of the fastest-growing professional sectors in the city.

It’s also helpful to know they offer harm reduction services and Narcan training at this location. Knowing how to administer Narcan can lower the risk of an overdose. During this training, they will show you how to identify what an overdose looks like, how to keep yourself safe and what to do until paramedics arrive.
