About Mary Starke Harper Geriatric Psychiatric Center
The Mary Starke Harper Geriatric Psychiatric Center is a residential mental health facility located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They treat people who are over 65 and have a mental health condition. They also treat substance use disorder (SUD) for those who have dual diagnoses.
Individualized and Holistic Treatment for Seniors
Potential clients will have a full physical and psychological assessment before being admitted to determine if residential treatment is necessary. Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance policies are accepted.
Clients will have group and individual therapy. They have a language interpreter for those who are hard of hearing. I was happy to see they also have a dietician who prepares food and consults with clients about their diet.
There is a group specifically for people who struggle with mental health issues and substance use disorders together. Therapists are trained in cognitive behavioral therapy which is often used in the treatment of SUD.
Building a Positive Life in Recovery
Seniors need to socialize and have plenty of recreation time. I love the music and recreational therapy there. They also have exercise classes and they even have a pastoral counselor that clients can visit.
The facility employs a physical therapist, so everyone can continue to work on mobility issues. A staff auditory specialist can help with speech therapy.
