The Manatee County Judicial Center has both a drug court and DUI court program in Bradenton, Florida. These alternative sentencing programs were designed with Florida's history of substance use in mind, mixing education with treatment and monitoring. The treatment portion is comparable to that of an outpatient clinic.
The two pillars of the program are accountability and behavioral change. The latter can't happen without the former. To demonstrate accountability, you'll be subject to close monitoring and required to meet to participate in a number of programs. Participants in these programs may be required to pay a fee to cover costs.
A Chance to Break the Cycle
There are many people in jail or prison experiencing some form of substance use disorder. Even though the purpose of incarceration is correcting criminal behavior, many of these facilities don't have the means to provide proper treatment. The Judicial Center's programs are designed as an alternative. Rather than facing a long sentence, you'll be given the chance to receive comprehensive treatment and engage in DUI and drug education. I like this approach because it understands that punishment isn't enough to course-correct drug and alcohol use.
Note that not everyone is eligible for these programs by default. Things like a violent criminal past or history of drug dealing will disqualify you. Check with the court for the full list of requirements.
Keeping You Accountable
One of the program requirements is that participants "Show Up, Be Honest, and Try." You'll need to show your effort toward achieving sobriety, and part of this is various forms of monitoring.
For example, the DUI program requires weekly court visits, home visits, regular drug testing and participation in support groups. All of that's on top of your counseling sessions. I realize it may seem like a lot at first, but by meeting these requirements you're showing the court how seriously you take the offense and making amends. It also adds a lot of structure to your days, which is a plus during recovery.
Supporting All Areas of Your Recovery
The second phase of the three phase DUI program includes recurring meetings with a case manager. They'll help you in areas where you're struggling by identifying supportive community resources.
