About (LSS) Lutheran Social Services – Center for Children and Youth

Arise Youth Center is a mental health service for at-risk teens located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They are part of Lutheran Social Services, an organization that has been around since the 1920s.

The majority of kids in the program have committed minor legal infractions or struggle with mental health issues, such as substance use disorder (SUD). The staff treats people of all faiths and beliefs, but they use the teachings of the Christian religion when providing therapy to clients.

I appreciate that they take private insurance and accept Medicare and Medicaid. If you have a low income and no insurance, you will be charged on a sliding scale.

An Alternative to Juvenile Detention

The Arise Youth Center works with local law enforcement agencies. They provide reception services in which law enforcement officers will bring kids who have committed minor infractions to the center to wait for a parent or guardian to pick them up.

Shelter for Homeless Youth

They have a shelter for kids who have run away, committed low level crimes. or live in dangerous situations. Teens can stay there from 21 to 30 days while they look for alternative accommodations.

I like the evening report center they run. Kids in the justice system can receive services after school and return home at night.

A Trained Staff

Teens in the program take part in group and individual therapy. I was happy to learn that many of the psychotherapists on staff specialize in SUD. If a participant needs aftercare, they will be referred to outside SUD specialists. They provide both in-office and telehealth appointments.

The staff is trained in domestic violence intervention. I think this is important because kids who struggle with substance issues often come from violent home situations.
