About Keweenaw Bay Indian Community

Keweenaw Bay Indian Community works to advance the health and vitality of its Tribal members. The center is located in Baraga, Michigan. They have a dedicated healthcare system that provides physical, behavioral, and mental health treatment, including substance use disorder treatment.

Tribal members can pay for services with Indian Health Service, Tribal, and Urban funds (ITU), Medicaid, and other government funding for SUD programs. Native clients 18 and over who reside in the Bemidji Region receive treatment services at no cost. Non-Natives who live in the region are eligible for services, but there are costs associated with treatment.

Integrated Native American Practices in Addiction Treatment

I noticed that the drug and mental health programs integrate modern evidence based practices with traditional American Indian treatment practices. There’s an onsite Sweat Lodge and a cultural consultant.

Clients receive transportation to local ceremonies and events that include Native American cultural teachings. Programs are tailored to specific groups, such as adolescents. They even host events, like the Substance Abuse Comedy Show, to bring the community together.

Individuals participating in the programs have noted that the counselors are dedicated and supportive through the entire recovery process. Some clients have voiced their appreciation for the personalized and compassionate care and noted that the staff doesn’t treat people like numbers, but as individuals.

Holistic Treatment Philosophy

The treatment team emphasizes a holistic approach to treatment by addressing the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual needs of the individual. They recognize addiction as a disruptive disease that disturbs an individual’s harmony and balance. I appreciate that they feel that each individual contributes essential insights to restore balance and overcome addiction.

The center is near L’Anse Bay and a few miles from Baraga State Park. Clients in the outpatient programs can take advantage of the healing forces of nature by hiking or kayaking in the park between treatments.

Amenities

Art Therapy

Art and music are mediums that connect with our feelings, making them a great recovery tool during addiction treatment. Studies show that combining art/music and drug rehab can have a greater therapeutic impact than drug rehab alone, as you’re able to access parts of your brain and body that you may not have access to during traditional talk therapy. Benefits of art/music therapy include lowering stress and anxiety, promoting healthy neurochemicals, and providing stress relief.

Music Room

Music can be extremely therapeutic, serving as a valuable healing tool and an integrative feature of a holistic treatment plan. A music room offers a large number of outlets, including singing, playing musical instruments, and listening to music.

Acupuncture Room

Acupuncture is one of the most popular luxurious and alternative therapies offered by rehabs. An acupuncture room provides benefits like pain reduction, improved sleep, a healthy immune system, and a decrease in anxiety.

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT)

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) is an integrative, community-based care strategy designed to address the needs of persons with severe and/or complex mental illness or behavioral disorders. ACT is typically provided by a multidisciplinary team of medical and mental health care providers, social workers, therapists, and other specialists, including addiction recovery professionals. These services are frequently provided in the home and community to clients in crisis, those who are clinically unstable, and those who are unable or unwilling to travel to a hospital or clinic for in-person treatment.

Levels of Care

Outpatient Rehab

Outpatient rehab in Michigan is tailored to each person’s recovery journey. This treatment usually involves several hours of therapy sessions each week, along with attendance at support group meetings. However, the timeline varies from a few weeks, to months, to years, based on your needs.

Dual Diagnosis & Mental Health

A dual diagnosis treatment center in Michigan allows you to get treatment for substance abuse and mental health disorders at the same time. This is critical, because untreated mental health disorders often lead to relapse and poor recovery outcomes.
